Being a Student in Sheffield
With over 60,000 students it's fair to say Sheffield is a thriving place for students to be. Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield are attracting students to Sheffield every year, but what else makes Sheffield one of the most popular cities in the UK for Students? Maybe it's that Sheffield is the greenest city in England with a third of the city being in the Peak District, meaning your accommodation will not be far from the buzz and excitement of the city or the peace and tranquillity of the countryside.
Or maybe it's the diversity of the nightlife, with your typical student nights running across the City Centre clubs and bars, to the independent real ale pubs that populate Kelham Island. Sheffield has it all, cocktail bars lining Ecclesall Road and Gin bars found on Abbeydale Road – it's safe to say, it's difficult to find a dry corner of Sheffield!
Sheffield music old and new, is recognised throughout the music scene right from the likes of Pulp to more recently the Artic Monkeys. It's no wonder Sheffield has so much home-grown talent with over 70 gig venues with one of those, the Leadmill, being consistently voted Best Live Music venue by NME readers.
University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University
Famed for it's culture, Sheffield boasts a diverse range of museums and entertainment venues including the Crucible, the world famous home of Snooker. Along with independent cinemas and an envious festival calendar covering food, comedy, film and music such as Tramlines, the city-wide music festival that welcomes 150,000 people to the city.
It's fair to say, if you love to watch or get involved in Sport, Sheffield is the place. Proud to be the birthplace of Football, with the World's First Football Club starting right here in this UK city. The English Institute of Sport is just one of many sporting venues open to the public and has seen some of the country's Olympic Gold Medallists trained here including Sheffield's own Jess Ennis and Boxing World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua.
Although Sheffield is one of the UK's biggest cities, it is infamous for it's village feel, known for the friendly locals devoted to their city and a roaring independent trade, Sheffield has been dubbed 'The Largest Village in Britain'!
