The Best Christmas Jobs For Students

06 December 2023 • 1 min read

Christmas is a busy time for students, juggling revising for end-of-semester exams, writing assignments, and trying to find the perfect presents for their housemates. However, it’s also an opportunity to earn some extra cash if you can fit a part-time job into your busy schedule!

The retail, catering, hospitality and logistics industries have some of their busiest periods over the holiday season. Many temporary, part-time jobs are perfect for students, from call centre jobs to bar work. Just be aware that you'll likely be expected to work on Boxing Day, Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, depending on your chosen Christmas temp job.

UniHomes has got you covered with a breakdown of the most popular Christmas temporary jobs for students.

Why should you get a Christmas job as a student?

Getting a seasonal job is a great way to gain some work experience and earn some extra money without the commitment of a permanent job. Still, some roles might lead to you being able to work there longer if you impress your employers (and they have vacancies available).

You’ll need to update your CV or create one if you don’t have one before you can start applying for jobs. Check out our guide to updating your CV as a uni student

Here are some jobs you should consider getting as a student over the festive period once you’ve got your CV sorted.

Retail jobs

Many large retailers look to hire more part-time staff to handle the rush of customers shopping for presents during the festive season. Similarly, supermarkets often hire temporary staff to help with all the Christmas food and drink.

From offloading stock to working at the till to sales assistant jobs, there are loads of different seasonal roles available that you can take advantage of as a student. Plus, full training is usually included.

Typical duties in retail include managing cleanliness and ensuring the shop floor is tidy and orderly, replenishing stock, and taking inventory. Whether you work on the shop floor or in the stock room, you’ll need good time management skills and a positive attitude.

Waiter, bar staff or kitchen assistant

Another popular job that’s always available during the Christmas period is waiting or bartending. Between Christmas work dos and festive menus - pubs, bars, and restaurants are always looking to hire some extra staff. Some might require experience, but other places will be happy to train you themselves. For front-of-house roles, you’ll need excellent customer service skills and the ability to handle the pressure of a busy working environment.

If you’d prefer not to work directly with customers, there are also lots of back-of-house roles available, from kitchen porter to dishwasher. Although these might not be the most glamorous jobs, they’re the perfect choice for introverted students who want to earn a bit extra over the holiday season!

Courier or delivery jobs

Whether you’re delivering packages or food, being a courier allows you to set your own schedule. So, you work as little or as often as you like over Christmas. You typically don’t need any experience, but you’ll require your own bike. You’ll typically be paid weekly or per delivery, so a delivery job is a great way to get an immediate influx of cash.

Mail sorter or warehouse assistant

Christmas means a lot more packages are being sent around the UK (and the world), and extra staff are needed to sort and deliver these extra packages to ensure they get where they need to go. For example, the Royal Mail offers seasonal mail sorter roles. With flexible shifts, these might be a good fit for students who want to fit their Christmas jobs easily alongside their studies.

Warehouses are also extra busy during the Christmas season, and plenty of operative roles will be available. Tasks will likely be physically demanding, with lots of walking to scan packages and manoeuvring heavy items, so it’s essential you’re capable of working in such an environment.

Customer service representative

Gifts and presents mean that many call centres are busier than ever during the Christmas period. Typically, you’ll be dealing with customer enquiries about delayed or missing parcels and complaints about damaged products.

Some of these roles might even be remote, so you can work from the comfort of your student house. Just make sure you’ve told your housemates to keep out of your room while you’re on the phone with customers to keep things professional.
