Newcastle student housing market: trends explained

No one who lives in Newcastle will be shocked to hear that Jesmond is the most popular suburb when it comes to Newcastle student accommodation. Located just to the north of Newcastle’s city centre (and, by extension, both Newcastle University and Northumbria University), Jesmond is an upscale community that’s full of bars, restaurants, cafés, and shops. There are even two Metro stops in the area to connect Jesmond’s plethora of student houses with the ample nightlife and shopping opportunities that the city centre has to offer.

Nearby Sandyford and Heaton are also really popular amongst students, and you’ll find that these two areas have a great mix of larger student homes available (from 3 bedrooms up to 6 beds and beyond).

But if you’re after smaller 1- or 2-bed flats that are closer to your classes, the city centre is your best bet. Student accommodation in Newcastle city centre mostly consists of conveniently-located apartments and PBSA options that are all nearby the very best attraction that Newcastle has to offer, including the mighty St James’ Park.

No matter where you end up in Newcastle (whether that’s Jesmond or Sandyford, or even over the river in Gateshead), you’ll never be far from your lectures or your nights out.

Student life in Newcastle

Its abundance of shops, bars, restaurants, and clubs has collectively put Newcastle on the map, with tourists and students alike travelling from as far afield as Middlesbrough and York for a proper night out. Don’t worry, though – there’s plenty on offer for Newcastle students themselves. With a diverse mix of places to eat, drink and party, it's no wonder it's such a popular city to study in and gain that student living experience.

If the sports scene is more your thing, Newcastle has got you covered. It's an integral part of the city, and there are loads of opportunities when it comes to watching first-class teams around the city. For starters, St James’ Park’s Newcastle United is the go-to football club, and if you fancy some rugby then you can head down to Kingston Park Stadium. Gateshead's International Stadium (which hosts a whole range of athletics competitions) is just outside the city, too, and the Great North Run is always worth attending.

Newcastle has a thriving arts and culture scene, with fantastic world-class music venues – such as the Utilita Arena and The Glasshouse (formerly The Sage) in nearby Gateshead. For the avid artists, there’s also a handful of award-winning museums, such as the Biscuit Factory and the Laing Art Gallery.

Tyneside as a whole has raised loads of famous stars, from proper Geordies who were born and bred in the area to honorary ones adopted by Newcastle. Particularly notable people associated with the Tyne include Alan Shearer (who grew up in Newcastle), Sam Fender (who hails from North Shields), and Rowan Atkinson (yes, Mr Bean himself attended Newcastle University, and is reported to have been born in Gosforth).
