Student Accommodation at the University of Sunderland

Renowned worldwide for its commitment to quality in teaching, the University of Sunderland sits at the cutting-edge of modern technologies and pioneering research. With over 20,000 students enrolled across its four global campuses, this hub for higher education has established a reputation as one of the most popular choices for study both in the UK and around the globe.

However, despite receiving high praise from both current students and alumni, this institution is always evolving to ensure it can meet the changing needs of students and provide clear pathways to their futures.

Situated in the north-east of the UK, the University of Sunderland works with industry leaders to give students the best access to technology and create links for internships and placements. Additionally, the university has strived to build global partnerships with businesses and thought leaders overseas to provide students with an outstanding education.

Faculty staff and student liaison officers work hard to keep a strong sense of community alive at the University of Sunderland, and it shows: in 2021, Sunderland was named University of the Year for Social Inclusion by the Times and picked up the award for the Widening Access Initiative at the 2020 NEON awards.

When it comes to finding student accommodation at the University of Sunderland, students can count on UniHomes for the perfect property to meet their needs. Whether that’s a modern flat in Millfield, a suburb just west of the city centre or a renovated period home in Ashbrooke, where gorgeous green spaces make for the ideal place to study on a sunny day.

Inevitably, the city centre is always in demand by new and returning students. Not only will you get to take advantage of the thriving arts, culture and music scene in Sunderland, but you’ll be within walking distance of both the campus and the award-winning beaches on Sunderland’s coastline. Wherever you choose to live, rest assured that the warm and welcoming student community will help you to feel at home in no time.

Life on Campus

Sunderland’s primary campus is situated in the north-east, close to the coast and boasting quick access to the rest of the country via rail and its international airport. Studying in the city centre means students get to soak up the culture in this thriving port city – whether it’s a shopping trip after class or a quick drink after a lecture in one of Sunderland’s many bars or cafés. If you prefer to stay on campus, you’ll be delighted to know the university has a range of eateries that serve up delicious vegetarian and vegan food at affordable prices.

The facilities at this university are second to none. Thanks to a recent cash injection to the tune of several million, Sunderland’s campus has been transformed to give students access to all the tools they need to succeed in their learning journeys. From an expansive library to science and technology labs, an impressive media centre and a law school that features mock-courtrooms, this highly-rated institution has been redesigned to deliver a holistic learning experience – whichever course you choose to enrol in.

Sunderland has long held a commitment to the health of its students and staff, and the confidential Health and Wellbeing service provides advice and support on mental health. A counselling service is also available for students in need.

If you’re passionate about something, there’s a good chance someone shares it. Sunderland’s students find likeminded friends and gain new experiences through the myriad of clubs and societies on offer at the Students' Union. From K-Pop to Politics, there’s a diverse collection of pre-established clubs. But, if you don’t see one that suits your interests, why not start your own? This is a great way to build a community of people who share your interests and make friends that last a lifetime.

Eager to keep active or feel part of a team? Sunderland’s sports clubs are always open for new members, whether you’re an absolute beginner or you’ve come equipped with the technique to teach your team-mates a thing or two. Fitness lovers will also be glad to hear there’s a multi-million gym which features 70 stations and a huge range of classes and courses.

If you’re looking for something a little more daring, head down to Adventure Sunderland on the Roker seafront, where you’ll be able to try your hand at kayaking, canoeing, abseiling and surfing. Even if you aren’t the sporty type, Roker and Seaburn beach have both been awarded the Blue Flag status for cleanliness and facilities, so you can always head over for a calming, post-exam stroll or splash in the sea during the summer months.

Sometimes, a helping hand from an experienced student can be ideal for those who want to make new friends and get stuck in. At Sunderland, the Students’ Union offers a buddy scheme and a peer support scheme, designed to connect students and help you get the most from your first weeks and months of university life.
