Student Homes in Falmouth

Home to the third largest natural harbour in the world, Falmouth once played a leading role in trade for the British Empire. Today, it’s a vibrant cultural hub that has all the charm of a maritime town and the modern amenities to boot.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that Falmouth University’s graduates choose to live here long after their studies are complete. This coastal town is nothing short of idyllic, after all, and being surrounded by areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty certainly helps. If you love to be beside the seaside, you’ll feel at home in Famouth – known as Fal to the locals.

Situated on the River Fal on the south coast of Cornwall, Falmouth is bursting at the seams with rich history just waiting to be uncovered. At the mouth of the estuary where Truro River and Fal River meet, you’ll see the Pendennis Castle – an impressive structure that dates back to the days of Henry VIII. In the words of Historic England, this is “one of the finest examples of a post-medieval defensive promontory fort in the country."

Although Falmouth’s maritime activity isn’t quite what it was, the docks still serve as a huge economic driver for the town. As the largest port in Cornwall, Falmouth’s harbour remains a key cargo hub and the perfect port for pleasure boats, fishing and sailing boats. As you might expect, the town is popular among water sports-enthusiasts who come by the hundreds during the warmer months for a spot of surfing, windsurfing, snorkelling, paddle-boarding and diving.

Boasting five beautiful beaches, Falmouth is naturally a hotspot for tourists who flock to this holiday haven to take advantage of the captivating coast and the culture that comes with it. The five major beaches start next to Pendennis Castle and move along the coast towards the Helford river – each has its own unique pull, from choppy waters ideal for surfing to sprawling sandy beaches suitable for sunbathing and dog-walking.

Beyond the boating traditions, the town of Falmouth has a rich artistic heritage which is perhaps more alive and well today than ever before. Falmouth University itself was originally an institution for artistic education, and still specialises in the creative industries. Every year, new students come from across the UK and around the world to take advantage of the expertise offered at the university and kick-start their vocational careers in one of the country’s most scenic locations.

Being a Student in Falmouth

A picturesque town and a foodie paradise, Falmouth makes for the perfect place to live, work and study. From the day you move in, you’ll find an abundance of activities on offer to keep your schedule packed – whether that’s making the most of the museums, bargain-hunting in the boutiques or messing about in a boat with your best friends.

Naturally many of these activities start with a round in at the local pub – and you’ll have plenty to choose from here. From the cosy interiors and craft beer at Beerwolf Books to the bay views, fresh seafood and wide range of drinks at the Boathouse, there are plenty of student pubs that have potential to become your new favourite. If a couple of cocktails are what you prefer, check out lemon twist: the mixologists here know their stuff, and the food served here is made from fresh, Cornish ingredients.

After a few drinks in your favourite Falmouth bar, head to Mangos on Church Street to cut shapes and soak up the good vibes. More of a live music fan? You’ll be spoilt for choice, but we recommend checking out Five Degrees West or the Jacobs Ladder Inn to get a taste of the local music scene.

Lovers of the arts shouldn’t take long to settle in to this seaside town. Wherever you go, you’ll be able to feel the creative spirit of Falmouth in some way or another – whether it’s appreciating the collection of Cornish artists at the Falmouth Art Gallery or catching a performance from one of the many local theatre groups. Of these, the Falmouth Theatre Company, also known as FTC, is the oldest local company with performances dating back to 1927.

For the best of both worlds, keep an eye out on the events calendar for Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society – there’s always something going on, be it an art exhibition or an indie film at the art house cinema.

Being a student in Falmouth means basking in nature’s beauty, and we can assure you it’s in abundance within the town centre and in the surrounding areas. There are a whole range of trails to choose from and several beaches including Castle Beach, Gyllyngvase beach, Swanpool beach and Maenporth. After a hard day’s study or a gruelling exam, there’s no better feeling than feasting on freshly-caught seafood and sipping on a cold drink in one of Falmouth’s harbour-side hotspots.
