Student Homes at the University of York

The University of York is a hub for pioneering research, attracting over 18,000 students from across the globe every year. As a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK universities, it’s no surprise that UOY attracts well-renowned academics, earning a glowing reputation for its cutting-edge approach to higher education. Here, life-changing discoveries are made, and students benefit from the teachings of experts in their field.

Situated to the south-east of York in the quaint suburb of Heslington, the university’s central location is ideal for students seeking to explore the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. That said, a strong transport infrastructure keeps students of this prestigious institution well connected to other UK major cities.

A truly global university, over 20% of the staff and students at the University of York come from outside the UK. The inclusive environment is as much of a pull as the impressive level of teaching and career-focused courses. In their time at the University of York, students will have their minds opened to a myriad of perspectives from people of all races, ages, backgrounds and beliefs. Whatever you study, you’ll be inspired to set the bar high and dream big. Plus, with a strong support network of faculty staff and members of the Students' Union, you’ll be surrounded by the people who can help you get the most from your time at university.

When it comes to finding student accommodation at the University of York, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Beyond the campus itself, you’ll find plenty of spacious student homes in Heslington itself. Proximity to your classes and the Students' Union are an obvious pull, but the scenery and student community in Heslington make it a perfect place to live. If you can’t find anything you like in Heslington, try Fulford – it’s right around the corner and is ideal for outdoorsy types.

Hull Road is also a student favourite, and worth exploring if you’re seeking a picturesque place to live and affordable accommodation. Not only will you be a stone’s throw from campus, but the city centre will be just a bus ride away. Plus, you’ll be surrounded by gorgeous green space.

Life on Campus

Boasting a gorgeous campus of 500 acres, students at the University of York benefit from a vast range of societies, sports teams and cultural events to get involved with. Whether you come from York, somewhere else in the UK, or another country entirely, you’ll never be short on things to do when you get to campus.

New students are instantly welcomed by a friendly atmosphere and encouraged to make the most of their experience by joining societies. Whether that’s a media soc, like radio or film production, a campaigning or political movement, or a niche club dedicated to interests like Anime or Animal Crossing. Whoever you are and whatever you like, you’ll soon find others who feel the same!

Campus is brimming with options for food and drink; we recommend Alcuin Bistro or D-Bar for a couple of drinks and snacks with your mates. You’ll also have the choice of three supermarkets to pick up your groceries. Best of all, the profits from food and drink outlets on campus are all reinvested back into giving students the best possible university experience.

As well as the sprawling greenery and scenic lakes, Campus West incorporates the York Science Park and the National Science Learning Centre. Since May 2007, the university has benefited from an extended campus just east of Heslington, which hosts three colleges and three conference centres and a sports village.
