Student Accommodation at Aberystwyth University

Aberystwyth University was originally called University College Wales, Aberystwyth at the time of its founding in 1872. A founder member of the University of Wales, this prestigious academic institution attracts students from around the UK — and the world.

Today, the university caters for approximately 8,000 students at any one time. There are three main academic faculties, and 17 departments spread across the entire town. The most popular departments at Aberystwyth University include the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Law and Criminology and the Department of Modern Languages.

This prestigious university draws in thousands of students from around the world every year. As a result, there are hundreds of great student houses in Aberystwyth to choose from — spread across four very different areas.

Many of the best studio and one-bedroom apartments can be found in the Town Centre area, as well as by the harbour. Staying here puts you within a short walk of the beaches, shops and restaurants the town is so famous for.

Bridge Street is home to a range of moderately priced victorian terrace houses, which can sleep up to 10 people. If you prefer to be right by the sea, however, look for student accommodation in Victoria Terrace, as it faces Ceredigion Bay. And to be right in the heart of the town’s nightlife district, search for homes in North Parade and the surrounding areas.

Life on Campus

Located just a stone’s throw from the Town Centre, Aberystwyth’s main campus is a sprawling complex of faculty buildings, green areas and recreational facilities. On the edge of the Penglais Campus is Penglais Woods, which is a great place for walks, jogging, picnics or alfresco study sessions during the summer.

The biggest building on the campus is the enormous National Library of Wales. Officially the largest library in the country, this exceptional facility is home to more than 6.5 million books, as well as extensive collections of portraits, maps, images and archives.

Students are spoilt for choice on the Penglais Campus when it comes to food options. Among the most popular eateries are the Theatre Cafe Bar, the Piazza Cafe and the Arts Centre Cafe. There’s also a dedicated music centre, which regularly hosts performances by the university’s choir and various music groups. The other major facility on the grounds is the university’s sports centre, which is home to gym facilities, courts, pitches and a climbing wall.
