Dundee is the fourth-largest city in Scotland, and is seen by many across the world as a leading force in technology, medicine and life sciences. As a global tech hub, it accounts for over 10% of the UK’s digital entertainment industry, but there’s loads more to do there than just develop the future.

Whether you already study at the University of Dundee or Abertay University or are planning on making the move, this list will give you a good insight into plenty of the city’s most happening things. Join us on this journey as we dive into Dundee and see what it’s all about.

There’s so much culture

If we were to try and write about the history of Dundee we’d need a lot more time, and a lot more space on this website. So we won’t. Instead, just know its history is vast and very interesting, and there’s so many ways to learn all about it.

The McManus - Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum

The McManus does exactly what it says on the tin, offering you an in-depth insight into Dundee’s past through historical artefacts and art exhibitions. If you’re new to the city it should be your first stop, and if you’ve lived there for a couple of years it’s always got something new going on to keep you coming back.

Dundee Science Centre

Part science museum, part super interactive playground for actual kids and grown up kids, Dundee Science Centre shows off just some of what the city has become famous for throughout the world.

RRS Discovery

The ship that took Scott and Shackleton to the Antarctic is now yours to explore! If you don’t know who Scott and Shackleton are, this seafaring museum will tell you, while also giving you a pretty well-rounded education on one of Dundee’s most famous exports.

It’s surrounded by nature

As a port city, Dundee has plenty of coastal wonders to enjoy, boasting stunning views across the River Tay and all the wildlife that you’d expect to come with it. Get some good walking boots on and start exploring.

Dundee Law

No, it’s not the name of the course you’re studying, it’s actually a massive hill that’s the result of volcanic activity over 400 million years ago. The Law is a dominating feature of the city’s skyline, and is full of historical features and intrigue that make it a must-visit spot. It might also be home to the best view you’ll get during your time there. You can’t say you’ve done Dundee if you’ve not climbed The Law.

Broughty Ferry Beach

This beautiful beach is nestled right beneath Broughty Castle, giving you all the fun and games of the seaside with a good dose of history thrown in too. During the summer months the beach is home to volleyball and swimming, while throughout winter it’s an idyllic spot for a walk and a pub lunch. Perfect.

The Botanic Gardens

Not many universities have their own botanic gardens, but Dundee isn’t just any university. Set across 9.5 hectares, the gardens feature plants from all over the world, as well as greenhouses and aquatic life. They’re well worth a trip out, and are always a hit with students looking to show off the city to their families.

It’s a lot of fun

Sure, it’s important to study hard while you’re at uni, but it’s also absolutely essential that you have a good time. Dundee isn’t short of options for ways to let your hair down, and if you don’t have much hair to let down, it’s full of ways to keep your spirits up too.

Wild Shore

Wild Shore Dundee is a mix of wakeboarding and inflatable assault courses. It’s a great way to blow off steam with your housemates, and can even be used as a way of deciding who’s paying for the pizzas later. It’s fun to be competitive, right?

Ryze

Trampolines, foam pits, slides and more, Ryze is the perfect day out for anyone with energy to burn. Whether you’re confident doing a forward roll or prefer to go straight up and down, you can run around and squeal your heart out in one of Dundee’s most gravity-defying attractions.

Dundee Ice Arena

If you’ve never been to an ice hockey match, you’re missing out. Dundee Ice Arena is home to the Dundee Stars, and you absolutely have to take in a game while you’re in the city. It’s a fast-paced sport that you’ll quickly pick up, with plenty of foam fingers on offer for a souvenir. If you’d rather take to the ice yourselves, the skate rink is also used for skating lessons and disco nights, all without the risk of a big beardy man slamming you into the hoarding.
