With exams finally out of the way, it’s time to relax and enjoy the holidays. So, if you’re ready to jet off in style, check out these sought-after destinations and discover somewhere new, without breaking the bank…

1. Bucharest, Romania

You might not know much about Romania, and what you are familiar with may only come from legend via the likes of Hotel Transylvania or Dracula.

What you should know is that it is home to the beautiful city, and one of the cheapest in Europe, Bucharest.

Known as ‘Little Paris’, Bucharest is Romania’s capital. A charming and surprising city with a thriving culture and foodie scene. Whether you want to party until the early hours of the morning, relax with a tasty (and cheap) craft beer, or enjoy delicious street food, Bucharest might just be the place for you.

While you’re there, check out Therme Bucharest. This spa features indoor and outdoor swimming pools, saunas, mineral pools and a swim-up bar - all for a much lower price than you’d find in the UK (or most other places in Europe!). Let’s also not forget a day trip to nearby Transylvania and Dracula’s Castle, for stunning mountain views and mediaeval architecture.

2. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Although Amsterdam isn’t the cheapest city, it’s one of the easiest places to get to and the flights are a great option for budget-conscious students who’re in need of a city break!

Whether it’s your aim to immerse yourself and live like a local, by hiring a bike for a couple of hours and visiting the local bakeries, or you’d prefer to just wander around the scenic cobblestone streets and canals, this capital city is a great place to explore. If you’re an art student (or simply a fan of art), be sure to check out the artsy Jordaan neighbourhood, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum

3. Edinburgh, Scotland

It might not always be the warmest destination for a summer break, but Edinburgh is definitely one you should consider if you’re on a mission to see more of the UK! Edinburgh truly is perfect for a city break .

If you’re after a cultural experience, Edinburgh is home to many of Scotland’s national museums and galleries (most of which are completely free!) . Or, if hiking’s more your thing, you can check out Arthur’s Seat for spectacular views across the city.

If you’re after somewhere to explore, Edinburgh truly is perfect for a city break.

4. The Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve, in the south of Portugal, is famous for its delicious seafood, scenic villages, and gorgeous cliff-lined beaches; making it the perfect getaway!

Opt for Lagos for a picturesque walled town and vibrant nightlife. Choose Faro for a more city-like feel, pretty cobblestone streets, and a beautiful Old Town, or stay in Albufeira for the best bars and clubs, where you’re always set to have an awesome time with spectacular party vibes.

Wherever you decide to stay, you’re guaranteed a relaxing holiday with stunning sandy beaches, without it hitting your pockets too hard.

5. Berlin, Germany

If you’re looking for a student-friendly destination with uni mates, look no further than Berlin! The nightlife is legendary, with over 4,500 bars and clubs across the city, including the famously hard-to-get-into Berghain

Of course, nightlife isn’t the only thing on offer in the city. If you’re into art and history, explore the Berlin Wall area known as the East Side Gallery - a free street art exhibition.

For an unforgettable cultural experience, check out Berlin’s Museum Island, featuring the Atles Museum and Bode Museum. While you’re there, you should also enjoy tasty and cheap street food specialities like the famous currywurst.

6. Athens, Greece

Although the Greek islands are stunning, they’re not always the most cost-effective holiday destinations. For a more student-friendly holiday, check out Greece’s capital instead!

Home to the striking Acropolis and Parthenon ruins perched atop the city, Athens is the perfect choice if you want a cultural city break but don’t want to miss out on the sunshine.

Be sure to explore The Plaka, an area known as the ‘Neighbourhood of the Gods’, which is full of fascinating ancient ruins. For the meat lovers, don’t miss out on delicious lamb or chicken gyros - the perfectly priced on-the-go snack.

7. Sunny Beach, Bulgaria

Most people wouldn’t consider Bulgaria for a seaside holiday, but the stunning Black Sea Coast is a hidden gem! The incredibly low-cost of living means you can let loose, whatever your budget is.

Sunny Beach is home to a picturesque sandy beach that stretches 2.5 kilometres along the coast. The town is also famous for its cheap and vibrant nightlife, so it’s the perfect place to party during the night and relax during the day! Of course, the UNESCO Nessebar Old Town is nearby if you’re looking for a bit of culture as well.

8. Barcelona, Spain

You might think you have to choose between a beach holiday and a city break for your summer trip, but Barcelona offers the best of both worlds!

For the lovers of art, architecture and history, this vibrant city is home to the famous La Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and numerous buildings by Antoni Gaudi, the city’s former resident.

When you’ve had your fill of culture, you can head to Barceloneta beach, just ten minutes from the city centre, for a swim or to sip sangria at one of the many beachside bars.
