About the author: Hi! I am Emma, a postgraduate student studying Digital Marketing at the University of Derby. When I’m not in lectures, you will find me reading a book while listening to Taylor Swift or playing The Sims for hours on end! One of my many hobbies includes finding hidden gems throughout my city, from cosy cafés to student-friendly activities.

Being a student usually means keeping an eye on your bank balance, but that doesn’t mean you have to live off the same meals every week. Luckily, Derby has loads of great places to grab a tasty dish without spending your entire student loan.

From cosy cafés and pub grub to street food and independent spots, there’s something for everyone. Whether you need a quick bite between lectures, somewhere to catch up with friends or a Friday night treat, here are some of the best cheap eats in Derby to try without breaking the bank.

My favourite cheap places to eat in Derby

1. The Olive Tree Café

For those days when you want a proper café breakfast without spending half of your student loan, The Olive Tree Café is a great shout. This independent café on Albion Street serves up classic breakfasts and lunch options, making it ideal for students who want something filling without the hefty price tag.

The menu includes plenty of classic options, with food starting from around £3. It's great if you’re trying to stick to a budget but still fancy going out for a meal.

Location: Albion Street

Vibe: Cosy, warm, and relaxed – perfect for a study session or a catch-up with friends.

2. Bustler Market

If you and your friends have different tastes and seem to never agree on where to eat, then look no further than Bustler Market. Located at St James Yard, Bustler brings together a range of independent street food vendors, so there’s plenty of choice for everyone all under one roof. Food options differ from El Capo’s pizza to Dollies’ American-style cookies.

Due to the variety of vendors, prices do differ, which also adds to the inclusivity of hanging out with friends who may be willing to spend different amounts.

Location: St James Yard, St James Street

Vibe: Lively, sociable, and aesthetic

3. Dubrek

Dubrek is a great option for students who want food alongside a bit of entertainment. Located on Bridge Street (only a short walk from all University of Derby accommodations), Dubrek combines food, drinks, and live events, giving it a more alternative feel than some other places on the list.

A perk of Dubrek is its deal of 10% off pizza between 6 PM and 7 PM, known as ‘soundcheck pizza ’, and their pizza and pint deal for £13. For this price, grab your friends and head over - it's a deal that can't be missed.

Location: Bridge Street, Derby

Vibe: Creative, alternative and laid-back

4. Jonty Farmer

A place known to every University of Derby student is the Jonty Farmer. Situated just a seven-minute walk from the campus, it’s a great spot to head to after lectures when you’re hungry but don’t want to spend too much.

The pub runs meal deals Monday to Thursday, making it a good option for students trying to stretch their money a little further. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite after university or meeting your friends for dinner, there are plenty of dishes to choose from.

And it’s not just the food that makes the Jonty Farmer worth the visit. Following a recent refurbishment, it has been transformed into a proper sports bar, making it the perfect place to grab your friends, find a game on the big screens, and enjoy some food while you watch.

Location: Kedleston Road, Derby

Vibe: Casual, relaxed, and sporty

5. The Standing Order

No list of cheap places for students to eat in Derby would be complete without The Standing Order. Located on Iron Gate in the city centre, this Wetherspoon is a popular choice for students looking for an affordable and filling meal. With a large menu offering everything from breakfasts and burgers to pizzas and pub classics, there is plenty of choice without breaking the bank.

Its central location also makes it a good spot to meet friends before a night out. With its large seating area and lively atmosphere, it is a great budget-friendly option for students in Derby.

Location: Iron Gate

Vibe: Busy, social and a classic student pub

6. Better Together Café

Now, this next spot is a real hidden gem of Derby and is extremely cost-friendly. The Better Together Café is based at Derby Council House, and it offers affordable meals.

Food is served from 12 PM to 1:30 PM and features a meal deal for £6, which gets you a main, a pudding, and a drink. Even better, it's run by learners from Derby Adult Learning Service, giving them the opportunity to gain experience in preparing and serving food.

Between the cheap meals and community feel, this is an obvious choice to try with your friends.

Location: Derby Council House, Corporation Street

Vibe: Friendly, welcoming and community-focused

So, where are you heading first?

From traditional pub food to street food favourites, Derby has plenty of options when you’re trying to eat out without completely destroying your student budget. The Standing Order is a great all-rounder, while Bustler Market is ideal for a meal with your friends.

And if you’re really watching the cash, the Better Together Café is definitely one to put at the top of your list.

So, whether you’re bored of cooking or fancy trying somewhere new or simply want an excuse to leave the house, there’s no shortage of cheap places to eat in Derby.
