Looking for a gig venue in Manchester city centre to add some excitement to your weekend? Manchester’s live music scene is one of the best in the country, rivalling the likes of our very own capital city, London. So, where should you visit here? In this blog, I’ll take you through some of the best live music venues in Manchester so you can make your Saturday night that extra bit more memorable.
10 best live music venues in Manchester
1. Band on the Wall
From jazz to rock, there’s something to suit everyone’s music tastes here, often daily. The Band on the Wall can be found in Manchester’s iconic Northern Quarter, in a building that dates back to the 19th century and gets its name from the 1930s, when the stage was literally perched high on the back wall.
After a transformation in 2022, this Manchester gig venue can now fit 520 people, perfect for a vibrant atmosphere that stays alive until the early hours (typically 3 AM on Saturdays!). Here, you can find jazz, blues, international music, and more, and the venue even featured early gigs from The Fall and Buzzcocks. Checking out the live music here is one of the best things you can do in Manchester.
Plus, its World of Music floor boasts purpose-built education spaces – so you can also find adult music classes here if you’re interested in getting involved with like-minded people!
📍25 Swan St, Manchester M4 5JZ

2. The Deaf Institute
Originally built in 1878 as an adult education centre for the deaf community, The Deaf Institute has now transformed into a basement bar, a roof terrace, an upstairs music hall, and more.
The first floor’s Musical Hall is home to live performances and a whole lot of dancing, while The Lodge offers a ground-floor bar, where you can enjoy being closer to the artists on stage. Alternatively, The Den is perfect for more exclusive celebrations.
You can find The Deaf Institute very close to Oxford Road, central to Manchester Met University’s campus and walkable for University of Salford students.
📍135 Grosvenor St, Manchester M1 7HE

3. Rebellion
Want to escape to a dark, high-energy music venue featuring metal, rock, punk, and electronic music? Located right near Deansgate, Rebellion is home to multiple events every single week and boasts a capacity of approximately 520 people.
This venue is built for volume, with a huge stage complete with professional lighting that makes every gig feel like a headline show. Similar to The Deaf Institute, you can explore three rooms here (Main Room, Lounge, and Second Room). It is also known for hosting after-show parties - think club nights following big arena shows like its legendary Cure after-party!
📍2B Whitworth St W, Manchester M1 5WZ

4. The Blues Kitchen
The Blues Kitchen offers live music and DJs every night, along with comfort food and spectacular cocktails. The plant burger is great for vegans, but I particularly love the smoked pork belly rib (served with a unique peach tea BBQ sauce)!
As well as blues soul music, you can also find R&B, hip-hop, reggae, and afrobeats tunes here. If you fancy something a bit different, you can always get stuck into this spot’s bottomless brunch or come first in the weekly Tuesday pub quiz. And don’t forget, if you feel left out of the live music, you can always partake in some trusty karaoke (these rooms are - thankfully - private and soundproofed!)…
📍3 Quay St, Manchester M3 3HN

5. The Night and Day Café
The Night and Day Café is home to a variety of local and international bands on Oldham Street in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, which play almost every night of the week. The Night and Day Café’s calendar is packed, so be sure to give it a scan and see which bands you may like to watch. As bands like Elbow were discovered here, you may just witness the next big thing.
And if you feel peckish, don’t sweat it – there’s plenty on the menu here, including wraps, burgers, and their increasingly popular handmade Neapolitan pizzas. The outdoor seating and cocktails are perfect for a sunny day.

6. The Warehouse Project
Found just a few minutes away from Piccadilly Station, The Warehouse Project is often described as an indoor festival perfect for club-goers. It is primarily known for its DJs, but you can catch live music here sometimes, including electronic bands, talented vocalists, and even rap and hip-hop performances.
The main room (The Depot) has a huge capacity of ten thousand, which can be incredible if you’re into high-energy shows but less ideal if you’d prefer a quiet drink. The Warehouse Project tends to run seasonally (September to New Year) but is now known for its August summer concerts too.
📍Mayfield Train Station, The Depot, Manchester M1 2QF

7. Gorilla
Seconds away from Oxford Road Station, Gorilla is known for being an industrial chic bar and club tucked away under the railway arches. Think minimalist steel and exposed brick – this is the type of style you’ll come across here, contributing to its reputation as one of the best-sounding rooms in the city. The main room can fit over 500 people, while you can also enjoy a raised balcony level in the Gin Palour that looks directly onto the stage. If you want to avoid a mosh pit (I don’t blame you if you do), this is the ideal spot for a clear view.
The Gorilla also hosts a large bar area, where you can enjoy a fantastic, award-winning pie or brunch (think eggs Benny). This makes it a great all-day venue – pop in for some food and a few catch-up drinks, and then stay for a spectacular gig later on at night. What’s not to love?
📍54-56 Whitworth St, Manchester M1 5WW

8. The Castle Hotel
With history dating back to 1776, The Castle Hotel is one of Manchester’s oldest – and most beautiful – pubs. But it’s more than just a pub in the city centre – after closing in 2008, it was rescued a year later and started to make its mark on the city’s live music scene.
As a small venue, it features an 80-capacity music hall with grassroots artists and widely successful bands. The great thing about this spot is that you’ll never be too far from the performer on stage, and you’ll always be in the thick of the action, whatever genre you’re into (it doesn’t just stick to one!). This snug gig venue in Manchester is perfect for avoiding the typical rainy days in the colder seasons, although you can retreat to the hidden courtyard when the sun comes out.
📍66 Oldham St, Manchester M4 1LE

9. The Albert Hall
What can I say about the Albert Hall? This venue is famous for being a Grade II listed former Wesleyan Chapel, resurrected in 2013. This live music venue in Manchester is a bit different to the ones listed so far, but it deserves a spot on this blog nonetheless. Before enjoying the show, visit Albert’s Schloss, the beer hall directly beneath the main hall, for a pre-gig pint.
Big-name artists like Florence + the Machine have played spectacular sets here, with the acoustics being naturally resonant. Despite the large capacity of around 1,900, the hall can feel surprisingly intimate because of the way the balcony wraps itself around the room. For the best views, make sure you head for this balcony!
Don’t forget, with the Hall Pass, you can access student-only events and drinks deals and enjoy more for less.
📍City Centre, 27 Peter St, Manchester M2 5QR

10. Manchester Academy
University of Manchester students don’t have to travel far for a good time with the Manchester Academy, a complex of four venues, on their doorstep. Situated on Oxford Road, the Manchester Academy is ideally placed for those living in the city centre or Fallowfield and has a large ~2,600 capacity with big-name showings (in Academy 1). The likes of Adele and Nirvana have graced this Manchester gig venue with their presence, yet because it’s part of the Students’ Union, you can still enjoy student drinks prices at the Union Bar nearby.
You can also discover smaller, more intimate venues here if you’re not into massive crowds, including the basement Club Academy (underground indie vibes, anyone?).
