How to find the best student utility bills

How to find the best student utility bills

17 May 2023 • 4 min read

As a uni student, utility bills probably aren’t one of your top priorities. In your first year, you’ll most likely be living on-campus, and more than likely, bills will be included in your rent - super easy.

We’ve put together this helpful guide to help you find the best student bills. Essentially you have 3 options: compare utility suppliers and find the best deal, use a helpful bill-splitting service, or opt for student accommodation with all bills included.

However, your second year is when things get a bit more complex. You’ll probably move into a privately-rented student house that you share with friends or course mates. Sounds perfect… except for the fact you’ll probably have to deal with paying utility bills.

Option 1: Compare utility suppliers

If your accommodation doesn’t include bills, you and your housemates must set up and pay your own utility bills (gas, electricity, and water). Plus, you’ll need to sort out other bills like broadband and a TV licence (should you purchase a TV to watch live television broadcasts).

This option allows you to shop around and find the cheapest deals. There are loads of different energy suppliers, so you can do some research to find the cheapest energy bill. Your house will have an assigned water supplier, so you won’t be able to find a better deal elsewhere.

Comparing utility suppliers might be the best option if you want the lowest prices for your utility bills. However, it can be a lot of hassle trying to set up direct debits and figuring out meter readings, especially if your housemates leave you to sort everything out. Plus, you’ll have to work out how to split the bills fairly across all your housemates and ensure everyone pays their share of the household bills on time.

We have a guide on splitting bills in student houses if you need more information.

Option 2: Use a bill-splitting service

If trying to set up your own bills sounds like too much stress, you should use a bill-splitting service instead. These student bills packages are specifically designed for students living in shared houses. They simplify shared bills by doing all the hard work for you!

A bill-splitting service will set up all of your utility accounts on your behalf. So, all you and your housemates have to do is pay one simple monthly payment!

You'll be able to choose the services you want to be included. Some services even include the cost of a TV licence!

Option 3: Choose student accommodation with all bills included

A bill-splitting service is a great option if you’ve already chosen your accommodation, but if you haven’t, why not choose accommodation with all bills included

This is the best and most simple way to deal with student utility bills! Choosing student accommodation with all bills included means knowing exactly how much you’ll need each month for living expenses.
