Welcome to Stoke-on-Trent, one of the most affordable places to study in the UK and famously home to Staffordshire oatcakes, pottery and of course the University of Staffordshire and neighbouring Keele University.

If this is where you’re calling home and spending your uni years, one thing’s for sure, there’s plenty to do. Whether looking for that hit of adrenaline at the UK’s biggest theme park, Alton Towers, browsing the shops at the Potteries Shopping Centre or checking out the theatres, museums, galleries, award-winning gardens, or the absolutely iconic Fresher’s Gate in Keele.

Beyond your cultural fix and fill of oatcakes, the nightlife in Stoke-on-Trent is pretty tasty and full of options too. To give you a head start, here’s our top 6 hangouts to visit before you graduate…

-

BottleCraft

If you like your craft beers and looking for the perfect spot to switch off from your uni assignments, BottleCraft is the place for you.

Since 2015, this independent craft beer shop and bar offers a wide range of kegs, casks, bottles and cans, as well as ciders, wines, spirits and more.

Right in the city centre, with ample outside seating for those sunny afternoons, this could be the ideal hangout for you and your housemates. If you like the vibe and find yourself in Newcastle-under-Lyme, you can even check out its sister venue, The Crossways.

-

The Sugarmill

Looking for an alternative nightclub for a big night out with your course mates? One with cheap entry, drinks deals and open that late it’s tomorrow morning? Get yourself to The Sugarmill.

A firm favourite in the heart of Hanley, The Sugarmill is the biggest club in the city centre and nationally renowned nightclub and live music venue, having hosted the likes of Catfish and The Bottlemen, The 1975, Foals, Kasabian and Coldplay. Open every Friday for its Electric Friday, this is a big one on the list and Staffordshire’s longest-running alternative club night, running until 6am on the last Friday of every month. Check it out if you fancy an all-nighter that isn’t doing last-minute assignments.

If you like house music, they also host The Move, bringing you the biggest names each bank holiday and occasional Saturdays.

-

Barge-Inn Booze

A quite literal translation for the name of this one, Barge-Inn Booze is the place to go if you’re ever having a wander down the canals and fancy some refreshment.

Not your usual canal side pub, this converted barge offers real ales from the local area and micro-breweries, as well as an array of spirits, hot and cold drinks, ice creams and snacks.

Mainly operating Friday to Sunday, this isn’t a bad place to take a seat outside, rest your legs, take stock of the scenery and enjoy some much-needed time out.

-

The Jug

It only feels right to add a real-ale pub into the mix. Never a bad option for a quiet drink, catching a live band or a cheeky game of pool, you could even find yourself becoming one of the regulars at The Jug.

Established in 1739, Newcastle-under-Lyme’s The Jug is a stalwart of Stoke-on-Trent. With its selection of real ales focusing on local breweries, quiz nights, beer garden and gigs running at least four times a week, it would be rude not to give this one a go.

A fantastic all-rounder where you can grab a bite to eat, digest your latest lecture, or just chill out with your housemates.

-

The Glebe

While we’re talking about real ale, we’ve got to mention the good old fashioned Victorian pub, complete with stained glass windows, traditional mahogany bar and leather armchairs by the fire, The Glebe.

Standing proudly since 1834, this grand corner pub in the heart of Hartey is just a five-minute walk from Stoke-on-Trent station and offers an array of local beers and craft lagers to try. It also offers live music every Tuesday and a quirky deli counter, providing an array of cheeses, cold meats and nibbles for you to sample.

Across the road from Stoke Minister and oozing character, The Glebe provides ample seating in its large front and back bars, as well as in its secret town beer garden. This is the perfect place to meet up with your uni mates, catch up with visiting friends and family, or simply grab a seat by the fire and have some much needed me-time.

-

Bloom Bars

If you’re looking for a little bit of luxury, Bloom offers you a floral and tropical escape across two venues, one in Hanley’s cultural quarter and the second in Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Ironmarket.

Bringing with it a wealth of extravagant cocktails, mocktails and gins, along with its delicious food menu, pink neon signs and floral décor, this is the place for those Insta shots and post-lecture catch-ups.

With bottomless brunches on the weekends, comfortable leather booths and relaxed atmosphere, look no further than Bloom to add some elegance to your uni experience.

Find your perfect place

Whether you call for a quiet one at The Glebe, check out some live music at The Sugarmill, or have a glamourous bottomless brunch at Bloom, you’re sure to find the perfect spot during your Staffordshire stay.

To help you feel right at home, we can also help you find that too, so you and your housemates have the perfect place to get ready, head back to after a night out, or host the after party.

We have a wide range of properties available across Stoke-on-Trent and better yet, every property we list is bills-included, so you don’t even need to worry about setting up or managing your household’s utility bills. Sound good? Grab your housemates, get your accommodation sorted and head into town to celebrate.
