Glasgow is home to several high-quality universities that welcome thousands of new students every year. The city has grown to be a hub for students to learn and enjoy everything the city has to offer - from beautiful concert halls and art galleries, to a vibrant, diverse nightlife.
If it’s your first time living in Glasgow, or you’re a returning student simply considering living elsewhere, this guide is here to help you decide where to live in Glasgow. Whether it’s Merchant City or West End, City Centre, or Partick, you’ll find out everything you need to know about Glasgow student accommodation in this article.
What should you take into consideration?
- Distance from campus and amenities
- Budget
- Local facilities
City Centre
By living in Glasgow City Centre, you reap the benefits of being close to everything you could ever need. There’s an abundance of retail shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bars. The superb transport links make it easy to commute and explore other areas of the city. What’s more, you’d be situated very close to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Gallery of Modern Art - perfect for walking around during a study break!
The most attractive element of student accommodation in Glasgow City Centre is that it’s less than five minutes' walking distance from the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University.
West End
The West End is known for its eclectic mix of cafes, restaurants, and shops, especially along Byres Road and Ashton Lane, offering plenty of social and dining options for students. Its close proximity to the University of Glasgow makes it a pleasant, short walk to campus buildings.
Cultural attractions like the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Botanic Gardens, and the Riverside Museum provide lots of opportunities to enjoy what the city has to offer without having to travel far from West End itself.
Merchant City
Acting as the cultural hotspot of the city, Glasgow’s Merchant City features theatres, galleries, and music venues. It offers an array of stylish bars, restaurants, and cafes and is in close proximity to University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University.
Despite being located outside the city centre, it’s an easy commute to the main shopping hubs such as Buchanan Street, as the transport links are fantastic.
Hillhead
Hillhead is located in the heart of Glasgow’s West End. If you want a lively neighbourhood, Hillhead is a great choice for settling into student accommodation for those students with a more flexible budget. Cafes and boutique shops line the high streets, and you get to enjoy everything that the West End has to offer. This includes being a short walk away from the University of Glasgow!
Finnieston
Student accommodation in Finnieston is ideal for students who attend the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian University. Short walks to campus also take you past trendy and lively neighbourhoods filled with hip cafes and bars along Argyle Street. If you’re an avid music lover or concertgoer, Finnieston is close to the SSE Hydro and SEC Centre, so you can enjoy it right on your doorstep.
This area is also a short walk to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and Kelvingrove Park - perfect for a sunny day or a walk in fresh air.
Dennistoun
If a quieter scene is for you, Dennistoun might be for you. Connected through great transport links, it has a nice range of cafes and bars close to Alexandra Park but doesn’t possess its own vibrant nightlife.
Partick
Partick is a notably popular student area, and for good reason. Affordable places are competitive here because transport links to the city centre are great, and it’s close to cheap eateries, shops, and campus (for those at the University of Glasgow).
Anniesland
Inexpensive and close to transport links, Anniesland is a great first place to live as a student in Glasgow. If you don’t mind a 15-minute bus ride or 40-minute walk to the University of Glasgow campus, this is the place for you.
