The style of student accommodation in Preston varies massively. There’s everything from large period semi-detached houses that have been converted into student house shares for groups of friends, to modern well-equipped city centre student flats for singles or couples. There are also plenty of smaller terraced houses on the rental market in established student areas really close to the University of Central Lancashire, too. All are perfect if you are looking for the experience of true student living located close to the city centre and/or uni.

Preston is a warm, friendly and liveable city on the North bank of the River Ribble. It was a real boomtown during the Industrial Revolution where its success was built on cotton and textiles. Whilst it’s rich in history, it’s always been a forward-thinking place – it was actually the first English town outside London to be lit by gas.

Fast forward to today and it’s now home to the University of Central Lancashire – the largest university in Lancashire and the third-largest in the North West. With around 38,000 students and staff, spanning 120 nationalities, it’s got a real buzz about the city. There’s a relaxed café culture, fantastic restaurants and shops, museums, galleries and theatres. Preston comes alive at night with a bustling bar scene, craft ale pubs, independent clubs and live music, comedy and entertainment venues including The Flower Bowl, Evoque, The Warehouse and Level. Reassuringly, Preston is proud to hold Purple Flag status for its safe and diverse nightlife. 

Preston has some great architecture, Georgian and Victorian parks, heritage sites and sports facilities including Deepdale Stadium, tennis, cricket, basketball and a skatepark. It’s a very well-connected city with Manchester, Liverpool and Kendal just 45 minutes by train. The Lake District is less than an hour away by car so you can get a regular fix of outdoor pursuits and stunning scenery whenever you need it.

If you’ve landed a place or are already studying at UCLAN - the University of Central Lancashire - and are looking for student homes in Preston, you’re in luck. The City Centre has a mix of different student accommodation types from apartments to houses, however, Plungington just edges it as the most popular choice for students. Immediately North of UCLan, “Plungy” (in local lingo) is blessed with plenty of terraced houses with 3 to 5 bedrooms. Slightly further north is Fulwood which has its own little community and is also slightly north of Plungy in terms of rental costs. Finally, a mile west of UCLan is the quiet leafy suburb of Ashton-on-Ribble near the renewed Docklands area.
