About the authors: Hi, I’m Emily Bath! I’m in my final year at Leeds Beckett University studying Media, Communication, and Cultures. I’m definitely a homebody at heart and love getting lost in a good book, but I also enjoy heading out for a hike, catching up with friends, or discovering new playlists to keep me motivated while working.

Hi! My name is Jarisse Nunez, a Business Management with Marketing student at the University of Leeds. I am an aspiring marketer who loves all things creative. Outside of my studies, I enjoy keeping memories in my scrapbook, staying active through yoga and going to concerts!

If you’re thinking about coming to Leeds for university, you’re definitely not alone. Leeds was voted the number one student city in the UK, thanks to its nightlife, food, shopping, transport and overall student experience (StudentCrowd, 2024).

The city is home to five universities and over 60,000 students, but the two most popular choices are the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University. Both offer great opportunities, but they provide slightly different university experiences. Choosing between them really comes down to what you want from your uni life.

Why choose the University of Leeds?

There's a reason UoL student Jarisse chose UoL as her first choice for uni. Here are her thoughts on why the University of Leeds is such a good institute:

Location 📍

Located close to the heart of the city, UoL is easily accessible from the city centre and popular student areas such as Hyde Park and Headingley – meaning that your journeys to those 9ams will be short and sweet.

Clubs and societies 🧘

Students are spoilt for choice when it comes to clubs and societies to join, with over 370+ to choose from at the Leeds University Union. From your regular sports societies to more niche interests such as Baking Society, Cosy Games Society and (Taylor) Swift Society, there’s definitely something for everyone! My personal favourite is the Yoga Society, as I'm part of the committee as their Marketing Secretary!

Subjects 📚

As one of the largest unis in the UK, UoL offers an extensive range of courses. Top subjects taught at the uni include Accounting & Finance (currently ranking 4th on the Complete University Guide's 2026 subject league tables), Marketing (ranked 2nd), and Childhood and Youth Studies (ranked 1st)! Most of their courses also offer study abroad programmes and a year in industry – providing opportunities for every student to have a unique study experience.

Entry requirements 🎓

The University of Leeds is one of the largest universities in the UK, with more than 37,000 students from over 170 countries. As part of the prestigious collection of Russell Group universities and ranked 21st in the 2026 Complete University Guide, it prides itself on its academic excellence.

As a highly-ranked Russell Group uni, entry requirements are high. Most depend on the course you choose and some may include pre-requisites and specific subjects studied at A-level. Generally, courses will require A-Level grades of AAA. For my course, BA Business Management with Marketing, this is the typical A-level offer. The university also offers the Access to Leeds programme, providing additional considerations (and potentially lower entry requirements) for applications based on personal circumstances.

Facilities 🏫

To accommodate the tens of thousands of students who attend, the University of Leeds has an expansive campus encompassing a wide range of facilities. The campus has four libraries, including the Laidlaw Library, Edward Boyle Library (more commonly known as Eddy B by students), Brotherton Library and Health and Sciences Library.

The university blends its rich history with modern architecture, showcasing this in its campus buildings. My favourite buildings on campus are definitely the Esther Simpson Building (a fairly new building for the Business School), the Maurice Keyworth Building (also part of the Business School, this one fuses traditional British architecture with modern glass), and the Parkinson Building (which includes the iconic Uni of Leeds clock tower).

Other facilities include The Edge Gym, which offers an extensive range of amenities including an 8-lane swimming pool, sauna, 250-station fitness suite, 2 sports halls, and more! And, of course, there are Caffè Nero cafés dotted around every part of campus so you’ll always get your coffee fix.

Social scene 🌟

Worried about missing out on the whole uni experience? Don’t be! Here at Leeds no matter which uni you go to, there are 100s of events and socials to help you love your time in the city.

One of the most notable Leeds rites-of-passage for students is the Otley Run. To clarify it is NOT a run (something I thought when I first heard about it!). It's Leeds’ most iconic pub crawl with about 17-19 pub stops, starting from Headingley and going all the way into the city centre. It's a great excuse for fancy dress and for having fun with friends.

Nightlife isn’t your scene? Don’t worry; the uni offers different events for all! Make sure to join a society or check out Leeds University Union events page where there are hundreds of events on each day!

Why choose Leeds Beckett University?

As a third-year student at Leeds Beckett University, Emily has seen firsthand what makes it such a great place to study. Here's her rundown on the best things about LBU:

Careers opportunities 💼

For students looking for a career-focused degree, supportive staff and a strong student community, Leeds Beckett University offers an excellent university experience in one of the UK’s best student cities.

One of the biggest strengths is how career-focused the university is. It doesn’t just help you get a degree, it actually helps you figure out what to do with it afterwards.

The careers team at City Campus offers one-to-one advice, CV workshops, mock interviews and networking events with employers. It might not sound exciting now, but when graduation suddenly feels very real, you’ll be glad it’s there. The stats back it up too; 91% of graduates are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating (Graduate Outcomes, 2022).

Facilities 🏫

Another thing that makes Leeds Beckett stand out is its two campuses. City Campus sits right in the centre of Leeds and has a modern city feel, while Headingley Campus offers a more traditional university atmosphere with green spaces that transform the uni experience once the sun is out. Luckily, there’s a free shuttle bus running between the two, which is ideal if you live in student accommodation in Headingley but study in the city, or if you just want a change of scenery.

Headingley is also home to impressive sports facilities, where you can book courts or equipment. Whether it's organising a mini tennis tournament with your flatmates or taking advantage of the free wellbeing services like therapy sessions and massages, there’s plenty available to support student life beyond the classroom.

Teaching 🍎

According to the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2025, Leeds Beckett is ranked number one in Yorkshire for teaching quality, careers and facilities. Students have access to strong IT facilities and plenty of bookable study spaces that can be booked for group work or independent study. When hand-in-season hits, these spaces become very popular.

Social scene 🌟

Of course, university life isn’t just about studying. Leeds Beckett has a great social side, with loads of societies and sports clubs to join, or you can even create your own. There are also regular campus events like pop-up vintage sales, poster markets, plant stalls and even free food giveaways from brands like Wingstop.

Accommodation 🏠

Accommodation also scores highly, with 97% of students satisfied with their halls experience (The Complete University Guide). Considering most students are learning to cook something other than pasta and work a washing machine for the first time, that’s pretty impressive.
