Surrey student housing market: trends explained
With most students in Surrey looking for properties on the UniHomes website that are near the University of Surrey itself, it’s no surprise that it’s this uni’s hometown of Guildford that’s the most popular area amongst UniHomes users when it comes to searching for Surrey student accommodation.
But Guildford has far more going for it than the University of Surrey campus; Guildford is a historic, idyllic town that’s famed for its cobbled high street, picturesque suburbs, and medieval castle. It goes without saying that it’s quieter than neighbouring London, but there’s still plenty to do when you live in student accommodation in Guildford – from clubs, pubs, bars, and venues like All Bar One and Popworld, to stunning countryside views in the nearby North Downs, there’s something for everyone here.
Egham and Farnham are also popular choices for Surrey student accommodation; Egham in particular is ideally located for both jet-setters and international students thanks to its proximity to Heathrow Airport (in fact, student housing in Surrey’s Egham is just a 15-minute car journey from Heathrow!), whereas Farnham is a quaint Georgian town with a great selection of 3- and 4-bedroom student houses.
Student life in Surrey
Surrey has a unique reputation for offering the perfect balance between rural and city life. With a friendly community atmosphere and plenty of green spaces on offer, students here soon find themselves settling in and embracing Surrey life.
There are loads of things to see and do all over Surrey. Explore Guildford’s historical and cultural roots in between lectures by visiting Guildford Castle and Guildford Cathedral, or stop off in Egham for its local farmers’ markets and scenic cobblestone high street.
Egham’s nightlife is also surprisingly impressive for a smaller town, with Royal Holloway University’s Students’ Union playing host to many a solid night out. There are plenty of pubs dotted around Egham for when you fancy a change of scenery, too, or you can even grab a quick half-hour train into London for a bigger, bolder, and louder evening whenever you feel like touring the capital.
More of an outdoors-y person? The Surrey Hills and North Downs make Surrey ideal for nature lovers; both are right on your doorstep, so students are never far from a new walking trail. If you're looking for something closer to home, Stoke Park in Guildford offers the ideal spot for a wander in between lectures or for a picnic in the summer months.
Did you know?
Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived! Surrey is home to King Henry VIII's favourite royal residence, Hampton Court Palace. This historic venue has undergone loads of restoration work over the years (including some extensive upgrades for Stuart king and queen William III and Mary II), and is now open to the public courtesy of Historic Royal Palaces.
We recommend taking advantage of the student ticket prices and wandering around the vast gardens on a sunny day or exploring the Tudor Great Hall and marvelling at the tapestries. Who knows, you might even manage to catch a jousting tournament!
