York student housing market: trends explained
Hull Road is just a stone’s throw away from the city centre and both University of York campuses, making it the most popular choice amongst students for accommodation in York. And with everything that Hull Road has to offer, who can say they’re surprised?
With local shops like the Co-op on your doorstep, plenty of bus routes into town nearby, and loads of spacious 4-, 5- and 6-bed student houses lining the streets, Hull Road is the perfect student community. Plus, it’s super easy to get to and from, and is right round the corner from runners up Heslington and the city centre.
That being said, Heslington definitely has a completely different feel to Hull Road. Tucked behind the University of York’s West Campus, Heslington is basically a cosy village that’s filled with a mix of students and families alike. Students living in accommodation in Heslington will find that they have easy access to the village’s pubs and post office, as well as the uni’s on-campus supermarkets and the GP, sports centre, and Greggs.
After somewhere closer to York’s amazing nightlife? Student flats in York city centre are really popular, thanks to their central location and proximity to York’s many pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants, cafes, and shops. York St John University students especially love city-centre living (as campus is located just to the north), but for UoY students there are the U1 and U2 buses to get you to lectures from your York student accommodation, or even the late UN1 bus for your nights out.
Student life in York
Named one of the best places to live in the north and northeast of England by the Sunday Times in 2025, it doesn’t take long to see what makes York so popular. From the medieval architecture and independent stalls at the Shambles Market to the eclectic range of shops, bars and clubs in the city centre, there is truly something for everyone. Whether you’re coming from another UK city or arriving from overseas, you’ll soon fall in love with the scenic city of York and the welcoming atmosphere that its community creates.
Step back into the Middle Ages and soak up unique attractions such as York Minster, one of the largest cathedrals in northern Europe (York residents get free access to the Minster, so make the most of this whilst you can!). Want to see even older pieces of history? Walk along York’s Roman walls, visit the Jorvik Viking Centre, check out the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey and the old Hospitium in the Museum Gardens, and head over to the National Railway Museum. There’s something for all kinds of history lovers.
Of course, history isn’t York’s only shining attraction. Home to a myriad of shops, York is perfect for students who love indulging in a bit of retail therapy. In the gorgeous city centre, you’ll find an eclectic mix of highstreet brands and independent shops, including Urban Outfitters, H&M, Zara, and Primark. There are loads of charity shops in York, too, so if you fancy yourself good at thrifting then make sure you check out the likes of Colliergate, Goodramgate, Walmgate, and Fossgate for the best places to find sustainable, secondhand outfits.
If you’ve burned yourself out studying or shopping, York is also a foodie’s paradise. Try Rise on Fossgate for the city’s best brunch menu, or try something new at nearby Everest Ghurka Nepalese Restaurant. If you’re short on time, the Shambles Market is a great place to grab a quick (but delicious) bite to eat.
Despite its walkable city centre, York offers one of the most vibrant nights out in the North. Student favourites include nightclubs like Salvos (Club Salvation) and Vudu, but if you fancy a more laidback, sit-down kind of evening then you’re in luck: from pubs like Northern Monk Refectory and The Last Drop Inn to bars like Manahatta and Slug and Lettuce, you’ll be able to find somewhere that suits your vibe in no time.
Did you know?
The University of York is home to loads of creatures, including rabbits, foxes, geese and, of course, the statue of former campus resident Long Boi. The real Long Boi (who sadly died in 2023, RIP) was a rather tall Indian runner x mallard duck who was so beloved by UoY students and the public alike that Greg James himself officially unveiled Long Boi’s commemorative statue live on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, all whilst wearing mourning black and a veil.
