A Guide to the Best Parks and Green Spaces in Coventry

As the weather heats up and exam season comes to a close, what better way to spend the day than a picnic or a walk with friends? While Coventry may not be by the seaside or be renowned for its rolling hills, there are plenty of gorgeous green spaces and beautiful places to wander around and explore.

Best public parks and green spaces in Coventry

War Memorial Park

📍Coventry, CV3 6PT

The War Memorial Park is a hotspot for students looking to get out and explore. Just on the edge of the city centre and Earlsdon, the park couldn’t be easier to get to.

The War Memorial Park isn’t just full of open spaces to explore, but also hosts a café, aviary, tennis courts, and is the home of the Godiva Festival every year. You can easily kill a few hours here, with a picnic and friends, or some headphones if you’re looking to get your steps in. The park takes roughly 20 minutes to walk from one end to the other.

How do you get there?

The War Memorial Park couldn’t be easier to get to from both Coventry and Warwick Uni. The 12X bus stops right outside and can be caught from Pool Meadow Bus Station and other stops around Coventry University’s campus or from the Warwick University bus terminus. Alternatively, the park is a 20-minute walk from student accommodations near Coventry Train Station.

Abbey Fields and Kenilworth Castle

📍Kenilworth, CV8 1BP

Looking for a more rustic location? Not to worry - Abbey Fields in Kenilworth is the perfect spot. Away from the city centre, it’s a great, quiet place for a wander. Grab a drink or a sweet treat from one of the many (and I mean many) coffee shops on the high street and enjoy the sun.

Fancy a detour? The ruins of Kenilworth Castle are just next to Abbey Fields. While you have to pay to access the ruins themselves, there are paths leading around the back of the castle that are free and fully open to the public, so you can still grab that Insta-worthy picture without having to pay to enter - perfect for your student budget!

How do you get there?

Catch the 11 bus from either Pool Meadow Bus Station or Warwick University bus terminus. It’ll drop you at the top of the high street, and Abbey Fields is a short walk up from there. When you see a war memorial statue, you’ll know you’re there. Kenilworth Castle is visible from most of Abbey Fields. Walk in the direction you see the castle, and you’ll easily be able to get to the grounds.

Jephson Gardens

📍Leamington Spa, CV32 4AA

Jephson Gardens is a hidden gem in Warwickshire. Just off the main high street in Leamington Spa, the Victorian-era gardens are a perfect addition to any retail therapy or shopping day. Grab some picky bits from M&S up the road and enjoy the scenery. The Glasshouse, located in the gardens, showcases tropical plants, a goldfish pond, and an observation beehive.

Feeling peckish? The Aviary Cafe next to the Glasshouse is perfect for a coffee, light bite, or a sweet treat. Hop across the road to the Royal Pump Rooms and Leamington Spa Art Gallery to round off your visit.

How do you get there?

Continue on the 11 bus past Kenilworth. Hop off at Leamington Spa’s high street, and Jephson Gardens is at the bottom, past Pizza Express and the Law Courts.

St Nicholas’ Park

📍Warwick, CV34 4QY

While St Nicholas’ Park may be a bit out of the way, it’s certainly worth the trip. There’s plenty of space for a picnic or a casual stroll. With colourful flower beds and a river flowing through, the park couldn’t be more scenic.

Grab an ice cream from the cafe on a hot sunny day, or rent out a rowboat and cruise along the river. Fancy something a bit more active? St Nicholas’ Park has plenty of level grass for ball games, as well as both adventure golf and crazy golf.

How do you get there?

This park may be more difficult to get to without a car, but it’s definitely worth it. An Uber from Coventry city centre is roughly £17 to £25, so definitely worth splitting with a few friends to lower the cost.

Alternatively, catch the 11 bus from Pool Meadow Bus Station or Warwick University Bus Terminus to Leamington Spa, and hop on the 15 bus from there. That’ll take you to Guy Street with St Nicholas’ Park just a ten-minute walk away.
