About the author: Hi, I’m Heather! I am a third-year Media, Journalism and Publishing student at Oxford Brookes University, but I am originally from Devon. I am a weekly host on Brookes Podcast, and in my spare time, I love spending time with friends and family, reading and baking.
Oxford is undoubtedly known for its academic prestige and striking architecture, but at the heart of the city lies its thriving pub scene. With over 90 to choose from, Oxford is the home to every establishment from cosy, historical gems to lively hotspots. But what are the best pubs in Oxford for students?
My round-up of the best pubs in Oxford
1. The Star, Cowley
The star of the list ironically goes to The Star. A firm favourite among many students, this independent pub has been serving the local community for 150 years. Situated on Rectory Road, just off the bustling Cowley Road, The Star is particularly popular with students due to the large number of them living in the Cowley area. However, the location is not the only reason that this pub is a fan favourite. The eccentric interior and warm lighting make for a cosy atmosphere, and the constantly rotating selection of beers and beverages on tap means this pub never gets boring.
Fit for all seasons, you’re able to enjoy a warm mulled wine at Christmas or a refreshing cider in the sun-soaked beer garden during the summer months. The best thing about The Star for me, however, is definitely Moonie’s Pizza. This launched in 2025 and is the pub’s very own pizza kitchen, where you can order from an extensive list of handmade pizzas or enjoy a ‘pint’ of doughballs. The Star really embraces its student community and frequently runs community-focused events like live music nights and, most notably, the annual Oktoberfest event.

2. The Head of the River, City Centre
Whilst The Head of the River is a bit more pricey and is perhaps slightly more luxurious than the other options on this list, it makes for a nice treat or, in my opinion, is the perfect place for a birthday celebration. Just a short walk down St Aldates from the city centre, this pub is located directly next to the river, with a large number of tables available with waterside views.
You might even spot groups of rowing boats out practising, an authentic, Instagrammable Oxford sight! During the summer months, they also run ‘Sunday Sessions’ where you can enjoy your drink whilst watching live acoustic music from 5:30 PM onwards.

3. James St Tavern, Cowley
Much like The Star, James St. Tavern is ideally located within Cowley, East Oxford, making it accessible to many students. This cosy student pub in Oxford perfectly embodies the rustic, fun vibe that many look for – think disco balls, neon signs and cosy corners to play the selection of board games on offer.
The highlight of James St. Tavern is its packed year-round calendar of events, bringing its community of loyal customers together multiple times a week. They run an open mic comedy night every Thursday that provides a space for budding comedians to try their hand at entertaining the audience, regular live music nights showcasing the best of the Oxford music scene, science talks, art classes, and markets.
It’s clear that James St. Tavern is much more than just your regular pub. You can even snap a few memories with friends at the photo booth!

4. Turf Tavern, city centre
Turf Tavern is the kind of place you envision when imagining the typical pub and is regarded as one of the most famous and oldest pubs in Oxford. Characterised by low-beamed ceilings and rustic curved bar options, Turf Tavern makes for a cosy drink both indoors and outdoors in the great beer garden.
Located near the Bridge of Sighs in the city centre and buried in Oxford alleyways and lanes, it can be a bit difficult to find for first-time visitors, but don’t let this put you off. Go to St. Helens Passage just off New College Lane and then look out for the ‘education in intoxication’ sign, which will point the way.
Fun fact: the pub was one of the main hangout spots for the Harry Potter cast and crew whilst filming. Clearly, Turf Tavern appeals to both Oxford students and ‘Hogwarts’ students alike!

5. City Arms, Cowley Road
This pub is definitely known to every student in Oxford and is regarded as one of the best spots to pre-drink before a night out due to its affordability and buzzing atmosphere. They cater well to students, constantly offering deals on food and drinks, like free shot deals and budget-friendly bottomless brunches - which should help you have a good time whilst keeping your budget on track.
This pub is particularly busy on Wednesday sports social nights, so don’t be surprised to see a flood of students in costumes! It is also worth pointing out that they regularly show sports matches if that interests you - perfect for World Cup season!

6. The Cape of Good Hope, The Plain
The Cape of Good Hope is conveniently situated on The Plain roundabout in St. Clements, at the bottom of Headington Hill, making it a central spot for a drink. They’ve got a lively atmosphere with ambient lighting and music. They tick a lot of boxes for students, offering food and drink deals, especially on a Wednesday night, and they host ‘Oxford’s biggest quiz night.’ This takes place every Thursday at 8pm, where you can expect a jam-packed night of trivia with the chance of winning a £40 bar tab or a ‘mystery box.’ Make sure to book ahead for this one as it gets very popular!
The Cape of Good Hope also offers karaoke every Thursday night with £4.50 drinks for all those who choose to take the mic and a free poker night every Monday from 7 PM onwards.
