About the author: My name is Helena Watson and I’m a 19 year old Criminology and Criminal Justice student studying full time at Swansea University. I have a wide range of interests stretching from sports and fitness to testing out cute little cafés around my area. I am also a proud women's rugby player who plays for Swansea University and for my local club back home in Stavanger, Norway.

Although I study at Swansea University, even I can admit that Cardiff knows how to throw a good night out. Cardiff is home to students from across three universities (Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and the University of South Wales' Cardiff Campus), which tends to make nights out in the city lively and enjoyable, especially on Wednesday student nights. And with Cardiff only being a short, cheap train ride away from Swansea, this city makes for the perfect Saturday night out for us Swansea students.

The clubs that make Cardiff worth it

When it comes to clubs, Cardiff never fails to give the full student-night-out experience. For starters, there's Live Lounge, a club where you'll find cheap drinks, free entry, and some good sing-along songs (the kind of songs that will have you losing your voice from singing along to covers until 4am). If you're looking for an even bigger night out, then Circuit is the place to go. With multiple rooms blasting music that ranges from classic dance hits to R&B, its over-the-top, flashy style always brings the atmosphere up for all who enter.

We can't miss the most important part of any Cardiff student night: heading to the Cardiff University Student Union. Their SU nights are all the rage, and YOLO and Misfits are what Cardiff Uni students never miss. The historically-cheap drinks, themed nights, and the energy every student brings to the night are all things not to miss out on.

In short, Cardiff's night outs have something everyone can enjoy, whether you like chaotic, crowded nights out with high energy or chill singalong nights with good drinks – Cardiff has it all. No matter what, you'll make amazing memories that (fingers crossed) you’ll still remember the next day.

Cardiff’s nightlife hotspots

In the city centre, the most lively area at night is St Mary Street, which is known as the main nightlife strip. The street is lined with multiple pubs, bars, and lively clubs, and is also the perfect place for a bar crawl or maybe even pub golf.

However, if you're looking for the start to your evening to be more chilled, Mill Lane is where you should be. This is where the trendier bars for all your cocktail needs, and is a great place to relax by sitting outside and talking with your friends – either for the rest of the night or until you move onto the stronger drinks. But if live music is what you're into, Womanby Street is where you'll find the more alternative and local bars, all filled with live music and a chill atmosphere that will last all night long.

If you're not looking to go out clubbing, student streets are where the vibes will be. Cathays in particular is the heart of Cardiff student life, and is filled with student houses (which are perfect for house parties and pres), as well as cheap pubs to start your night off right and many takeaways for when you get back at 3 am.

How to get around Cardiff

Cardiff is, for the most part, super easy to get around. The majority of the city’s best bars and clubs should be within walking distance for most students, meaning the journey from pres to Circuit is pretty easy, and you might not even need a taxi. However, when Ubers or taxis are required (and not just wanted) for those cold nights, they are typically easy to get and are at a reasonable price for students.

Everything in Cardiff feels well-connected, compact, and student-friendly; you’ll never be too far from the next bar, takeaway, or dance floor. For the Swansea lot visiting on weekends, trains are pretty easy to get, usually only taking an hour and costing anywhere from £6 with a rail card – I mean, how can you say no to that?

In short, Cardiff’s got everything you could want from a student night out: cheap drinks, lively clubs, and an atmosphere that never disappoints. Whether you’re there for a wild night or a chilled catch-up with friends, the city always delivers the best. It’s definitely worth the quick trip from Swansea!
