About the author: Hi, I’m Lara Parsons! I recently graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in Journalism, Media and Culture. Originally from London, I've loved experiencing the buzz of both cities and I'm excited to share my tips on the best places to explore near you!

Almost every Newcastle student loves a good pub. Even if you’re not a big drinker, you can’t deny that the vibes our city’s pubs bring are immaculate; it’s hard not to have a good time chatting to your friends over a drink or two, enjoying the company and basking in the community spirit. But, in typical student fashion, we still want to make sure we’re getting a good deal while down at the local – so here’s my take on the best pubs for students in Newcastle, taking into account offers and outdoor areas, location and lagers. Want to know about food and entertainment? We’ve got you covered.

Soho Jesmond (Osbornes)

Introducing Soho Jesmond – the king of Jesmond’s Osborne Road and the go-to venue for all your pub adventures. Fancy a pub quiz? They’ve got you, every single Sunday. Want to watch the football? Live sport is shown daily! Taking part in a pub crawl? Student drink deals will make your night cheap and cheerful. Or maybe you're just in need of a good natter with your mates? Grab a £2 pint on Tuesdays and chat the night away.

With a spacious outdoor area featuring squishy sofas, bar stools, and picnic tables, you can enjoy cocktails under vast umbrellas – perfect for sheltering from the classic northern rain. Craving something to eat to pair with your drink? Grab some grub from Brack Burger, located inside the venue. Whack on the outdoor heaters and you're all set for the evening.

However, as soon as the sun emerges, umbrellas come down and students make a beeline for this buzzing spot – transforming the space into a sociable beer garden. It’s hard to find a spot to sit due to its popularity in the summer, so get there early and settle in for a warm afternoon filled with laughter. A crisp pint in the sun has never tasted so good.

⌛ Opening times: 12:00 to 23:00 Monday to Saturday; 12:00 to 22:30 Sunday
📍 Address: 61-73: Osborne Rd, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 2AN

The Hancock

Need a break from the typical student areas? Head to The Hancock, a hidden gem located between Haymarket and Jesmond Metro stations. Just a two-minute walk from Newcastle University campus, it’s conveniently placed next to the Philip Robinson and the Marjorie Robinson libraries – ideal for a (lengthy) revision break.

Happy hour drinks start from just £3 and run from 17:00 to 20:00, Monday to Friday. You can also grab two cocktails for £12 every day. Student offers, such as 20% off food from Friday to Sunday and £2 pints every Monday, make this one of the best student pubs in Newcastle.

Speaking of food… a brand new, mouth-watering menu has just launched. It includes something for everyone, and the deals are jaw-dropping. A star player for me is the 2-for-1 pizza, which can be ordered all day Sunday to Thursday.

When Osborne Road gets a bit hectic during football or rugby matches, The Hancock is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle. Live sports are streamed on big screens located inside and out. You can soak up the match-day atmosphere in their stylish beer garden, complete with huts and long, wooden tables. Grab a four-pint pitcher and immerse yourself in the match.

⌛ Opening times: 12:00 to 00:00 Monday to Saturday; 12:00 to 23:00 Sunday
📍 Address: 2a Hancock Street, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE2 4PU

Cog and Wheel

For those looking for a good time in Sandyford, search no further than the Cog and Wheel. Although this dog-friendly venue only opened in 2020, it's one of the most popular student pubs in Newcastle. The exposed brick walls, neon signage and open-plan layout gives the place a contemporary edge which draws in a young, lively crowd.

Bottomless brunch is available all day, every day – but what really sets Cog and Wheel apart is its range of food and drink deals that are signature to specific days of the week, giving students every reason to swing by. ‘Tue-for-1,’ ‘Wheel Wednesday,’ and ‘Thirst-Day’ are a few fun examples. Sundays are a standout, however, with a weekly games night kicking off from 19:00 and a hearty Sunday roast which makes you feel right at home.

Mixologists man the bar, crafting one-of-a-kind cocktails that keep you coming back. Their speciality is margaritas, offering a variety of flavours catering to all. Sweet tooth? Spice lover? Sour enthusiast? They’ve got you covered.

⌛ Opening times: 12:00 to 00:00 Monday to Friday and Sunday; 11:00 to 00:00 Saturday
📍 Address: 131 Sandyford Rd, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 1QR
