Newcastle student life

About the author: Hello, I’m Lara, a budding journalist and creator. Having grown up in London and graduated from Newcastle University, I crave the buzz of big cities and appreciate their accessibility. I’m keen to share hidden gems and tips on the best places to explore near you!

Newcastle does nights out like no other city, and its streets are always alive with students on the hunt for a good time (even after Freshers' Week).

Whether you’re craving a chill pub night with your pals, a few drinks at a live music bar, or a cheeky boogie at a pumping club – Newcastle has it all, every day of the week.

With proximity on your side, each venue is placed relatively close together, ensuring you can visit a few places in one night. There are tonnes of cracking Newcastle night-out options, and I’ve identified a select few that remain my firm favourites. Your bar crawl won’t be boring if you grab inspiration from this list!

Where to go on a student night out in Newcastle

The best clubs in Newcastle

1. World Headquarters Club

Here at WHQ, it’s head-bop central. Almost everyone has their hand in the air and is bouncing up and down to the beat of the transcendental music. With the speaker placed in the middle of the room, the focus shifts centrally, allowing each individual to bounce off each other’s energetic vibe and make eye contact across a sea of bodies.

Events are spread across each day of the week, but Tuesdays are the highlight. Groovy Disco Tech is the name of this recurring event, providing garage music that has its beats seeping into your body and making your stomach vibrate with its might. This club isn’t one for the half-hearted.

2. NX

NX is your local music venue. Hosting both club nights and live events, mainstream artists and DJs come from far and wide to perform, including the likes of Sammy Virji and Rudimental.

Features include an impressive main stage with a screen showing complimentary visuals, a vast dancing pit, and a 360-degree soundscape generated from the surrounding speakers.

Though this venue is more expensive than others, due to the well-known headliners, it’s definitely worth a visit every so often – treat yourself! Make sure to book in advance as the events are often sellouts.

📍 Address: Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1SW

3. Cobalt Studios

If you’re looking for a club with an alternative and edgy vibe, Cobalt Studios is the place for you. With its focus being on community, self-expression and creativity, the atmosphere created by Cobalt Studios is rare and unlike that of any other club in Newcastle. Hip and cool, its personality aligns with that of the area it’s situated in itself. Ouseburn is a vibrant quarter of Newcastle, home to creatives and young professionals.

The venue focuses on diversity and inclusion, putting on a range of day and evening events that suit everyone. Live-drawing sessions, sound baths and DJ classes specifically for women are among many. The space is also fully wheelchair accessible.

On Friday nights, the place transforms to accommodate for a wilder crowd of party-goers. It adopts the feel of an underground club, luring in those who are truly committed to the late-night music scene.

📍 Address: 10 Boyd Street, Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 1AP

My favourite bars in Newcastle

1. The Dubliner

The Dubliner is a tasteful live-music venue located in the city centre. The space is intimate and cosy, creating an authentic likeness to a true Irish bar, and on Friday and Saturday nights this place hires artists to perform on a little stage in the room.

The drinks are excellent value, specifically the pints of Guinness and Baby-Guinness shots, and even more enjoyable shared with a bunch of your close-knit friends. Spirits are always high in The Dubliner. The room is filled with beaming faces and jolly dancing, infusing the atmosphere with positivity and harmony.

📍 Address: 12 Close, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3RE

2. The Holy Hobo

A student favourite is The Holy Hobo! As Jesmond’s only karaoke bar, The Holy Hobo is brimming with young people every night of the week. This spot is particularly popular on a Tuesday night due to its brilliant student discounts, including a 2-for-1 drink deal on double-shot spirits and mixers.

Its amenities are unmatched; with a disco floor, DJ deck, karaoke stage and two bars, it’s no wonder the hype surrounding The Holy Hobo is so huge. There’s even a large outside smoking area out front, perfect for those who need a mid-boogie debrief. The venue is also available to book out for personal events.

📍 Address: THREE, Jesmond Three Sixty, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 1DB

Newcastle’s best pubs

1. The Tyne Bar

Only one pub is included in this list, as I believe no other places compare. The Tyne Bar has existed in Ouseburn since 1994, and it’s devoted to accommodating its locals, brewing high-quality beer and regularly hosting live-music events.

The exterior of the building is traditional and quaint, evoking a grandiosity reminiscent of its past. Its famous beer garden overlooks the River Tyne at the Quayside, with tables and benches spread alongside the waterside. An additional seating area exists round the side of the pub, consisting of a cosy collection of sit-down spots lit by fairy lights and decorated with heaters.

Every Tuesday, a deal runs which gives customers a free meal if they spend £7 on drinks or food. The turnover on this day of the week is huge, as people flock from far and wide to try the weekly specials, which always provide a vegetarian option. This pub is a must-visit!
