About the author: Hello! My name is Madelaine Lee but I usually go by Maddie. I am currently a 2nd year Fine Art student at the University of EdinburghI love doing things that are hands on – whether it's art and crafts, gardening, painting, pottery, you name it! I am also very much a nature girl and love going on walks and hikes. My art studio is where I spend most of my time, but if not you will probably see me dancing or ice skating too. I can't wait to share the ins and outs of university life with all of you!

When people think of student life in university, they tend to imagine night outs, pubs, and a social life revolving around alcohol. Edinburgh definitely has that scene, however there is also a lot to do here without alcohol involved. Whether you don't drink, are giving Dry January a go, or just want a break from the tiring night outs, this blog is perfect for you as I have just the right tips and recommendations!

I personally don’t drink, so I was initially scared that I might feel left out when hanging with a group of friends. Turns out, I still had loads of fun in many other ways and am not missing out on anything at all!

Café culture

Just like pub culture, café culture is elite here in Edinburgh. In fact, I see a café on almost every street I walk by, and some of my favourite social moments are from the long, cosy café catchups I have with friends. My favourite cafés are Black Medicine Coffee located at Nicolson Street, Books N’ Cup Café at Home Street, and The Edinburgh Larder at Blackfriars Street.

I love hanging out in cafés especially because it is perfect for a warm and relaxed place to talk without shouting over music. Some of my closer friendships started from café hopping together, so don’t be afraid to ask a friend out for coffee sometimes!

Late night walks > late nights out

Edinburgh has some of the most beautiful views, especially during sunset and late at night when all the beautiful lights shine on the architecture in the city. Some of my favourite sober evenings have been spent walking through the Meadows, watching the sunset by Calton Hill, or wandering around Old Town with my friends.

There is something special about walking and talking as that makes the conversation flow more naturally. Apart from getting the steps in, it is a great way to unwind from the busy day of lectures. No hangovers, no regrets. Just amazing views and better memories. Arthur’s Seat at sunrise or sunset is genuinely one of the best experiences you can have here!

Societies

I definitely recommend joining societies that are not party-focused. Although it may seem that way in Freshers’ Week, a lot of societies (such as the ice skating and Malaysian society) that I have joined involve a mix of sober activities such as sports day, picnics, fairs, practice sessions, painting bonding time, and many more.

Often, you’ll find a range of societies that includes academic, creative, and cultural themes. There is always something for everyone, and the more you join, the more your schedule will be filled! If you’re not into clubbing, this is especially a great way for making friends based on your hobbies. These spaces are naturally more inclusive as you share common interests, which takes the pressure off drinking completely.

Entertainment in the city

After having completed our exams for semester one, me and my friends celebrated by going to the cinemas and the theatre at the Festival Theatre by Nicolson Street. There is an under-25 scheme where you can get any on-the-day tickets for £10 for any show!

An alternative could also be the tons of free museums and galleries in Edinburgh. Most of them are free or at a reduced price for students, so it is a very budget-friendly option. The National Museum of Scotland is one of my go-to places when I want to do something with my friends that’s social but still a chill activity. As an art student myself, it is extremely fun wandering around with my friends, getting lost in the large interior of the museums and accidentally spending almost the whole day looking around all the pieces. I've written more about Edinburgh's galleries here.

By choosing not to go out and drink, you are not missing out. You are just choosing differently and have a different preference. It doesn’t make your student experience smaller, if anything it makes it more intentional. You remember conversations and wake up without regrets. Most importantly, you find joy in moments that don’t depend on alcohol.

Edinburgh makes it easy to build a social life that fits you; whether it is visiting shows or galleries, hiking or joining societies, there is a space here for everyone.
