Lincoln Freshers’ Guide: A One-Stop Shop of Everything You Need to Know

Starting your university journey is a huge step, and if you are heading to Lincoln, then you will want to know everything about Freshers’ Week. This is the perfect opportunity to calm your nerves, make new friends, and let your hair down a little – moving away is stressful! Just remember that everyone is in the same boat as you.

Although it is normally associated with big nights out, this guide will walk you through everything from freshers’ fairs and society events to the famous Lincoln Quack! and other nightlife options, as well as some alcohol-free activities and my own top tips.

Lincoln Uni Freshers’ guide 2026: a breakdown

Move-in day and what to expect

Move-in day is probably circled in your calendar right now – this is the big day after all! To give yourself some peace of mind before moving in, try to find people also going into first year too. Often, group chats are made, and you can start making friends and finding potential housemates early.

Speaking of early – do things early! On move-in day, get a morning slot if you can so you have time to organise, unpack, say goodbyes, meet new people, and explore the city centre. This day is busy, so don’t leave moving in until the last minute.

You will quickly find that Lincoln fresher welcome talks and inductions have been scheduled by the university – go to these! Part of being a fresher is getting to know your university as well as the city, and these talks are the perfect opportunity to explore the grounds and get your ID cards activated and ready to go.

You will become familiar with being handed leaflets showcasing a variety of societies and Freshers’ fairs, pop-up shops, deals for nights out, and coupons for food. Take all of these – especially any freebies! You can pin these to your wall or keep them downstairs to decide which activities you would like to attend in the week.

Exploring Lincoln

This is the week to explore Lincoln before beginning your studies (without the pressure of getting lost). Whilst I recommend walking through the university grounds and noting any buildings on your timetable, you should also peek at Lincoln’s iconic streets and attractions.

The Brayford Waterfront sits next to the university and has an array of restaurants to try (see which ones offer student discounts)! Whilst you are there, look at Lincoln’s Engine Shed where Quack! is hosted each week alongside other events.

Most importantly, wander through Lincoln’s High Street and Steep Hill filled with quirky shops and cafés - my personal favourites include Design 44 for cute art and Beyond Coffee for a perfect mid-lecture snack.

With both its cathedral and castle being found in the Cathedral Quarter, you can delve into Lincoln’s history. Students get free entry into the cathedral, so pop in and find out about the legend of the Imp or take a stroll through the Arboretum for a picnic.

Lincoln Freshers’ nights out – what is ‘Quack!’?

It is tradition for Lincoln Uni freshers to experience Quack!, our unique student-only night out (no, it is not a secret duck society, unfortunately). Quack! is a themed dress-up party hosted by Lincoln’s Student Union at the Engine Shed every Wednesday.

From foam nights to pyjama parties, students can dress silly and let loose. It gets better. Each week has its own themed rubber duck which gets hidden around the campus. Students can use clues on social media to win prizes or have bragging rights over finding Quack!’s mascot.

Students can also attend an array of freshers’ club nights at Home (our primary club, not to be confused with your own home), which is found on Lincoln’s High Street. Union is hosted every Tuesday, which allows societies to throw themed nights for students to enjoy.

Whether you are dressing for the 80s, becoming a sailor or a zoo animal, Union has something for everyone and sells tickets early for Freshers’ Week events. Fridays at Home are reserved for Lincoln’s iconic Super Bull, where you can dance to top hits and take pictures with the bull mascot, which floats between floors.

Many bars such as Trebles, Carousel, and Walkabout also offer coupons for drinks and shooters and are part of the freshers’ wristband options.

Not a night out person? Not a problem!

Freshers’ is not about partying – most importantly, it is about finding your place in your new surroundings. There are plenty of non-clubbing activities to choose from that should not be overlooked. And let’s face it, you’ll be likelier to avoid the dreaded freshers’ flu this way…

Pop-up shops are dotted around campus so you can browse stalls for posters and decor or attend vintage clothing sales if you love a thrift. Societies also throw taster activities such as crafts or board game nights and even sporting events where you can meet new people.

You don’t need to drink to make friends, and you will find many people who opt for café or cinema dates, pub quizzes, or host fun PowerPoint nights! Don’t forget to explore Lincoln’s hotspots.

Final thoughts and tips for Lincoln Freshers’ Week

Before you enter Freshers’ Week at the University of Lincoln, remember that its purpose is to help you settle in, and this is the time to say yes to every opportunity.

Everyone’s experience is different! Whatever you decide to do, just stay safe, budget wisely, and remember to experiment by joining new things.
