The Best Places to Go on a Night Out in Edinburgh in 2026

Edinburgh is a city that has something for everyone when it comes to nights out – cheap pub pres, live music, underground clubs, and iconic student dancefloors.

But the best part is that most of the nightlife is centred around Cowgate, South Bridge and Lothian Road in Edinburgh Old Town, meaning you can easily walk between each spot without spending money on Ubers. It’s a student’s paradise!

Where to go for a night out in Edinburgh in 2026

1. Wetherspoon: the place for classic pre-drinks 🍹

The classic way to start a great student night out always begins with Spoons. Me and my friends’ go-to is the Caley Picture House, just off Lothian Road; it’s usually packed with students before club nights, because the drinks are hard to beat for the price. Cocktails are around £5-7, pints are under £4 on many nights, and there are plenty of cheap options for pitchers if you’re splitting with friends.

It’s also just a 10-minute walk away from most clubs, making it the perfect meeting point before losing everybody.

2. Subway: the ultimate student club 🪩

If you’ve studied in Edinburgh but haven’t gone to Subway, did you even go on a night out? This is THE iconic night club for students. Located right at Cowgate, it's famous for its cheesy pop, throwback hits and energetic student crowds. It's not that fancy, and that’s exactly why everyone loves it.

Think ABBA, One Direction, early 2000s bangers and people dancing like nobody’s watching. Entry is usually £5-10 depending on the event, and the drinks are student budget-friendly, too.

3. Stramash: for live music lovers 🎵

The live music venue that my friends always recommend to me is Stramash.

Also in Cowgate, it’s one of the busiest live music venues in the city, with bands playing everything from rock and indie to funk and soul almost every night. The atmosphere feels much more relaxed than a nightclub, making it ideal if your group wants to chat, sing along and actually enjoy live performances.

The best thing is that entry is often free – so it’s one of the cheapest night outs you can have in Edinburgh.

4. Sneaky Pete’s: for indie & electronic vibes 🎸

Just a short walk down the road is Sneaky Pete’s, one of Edinburgh’s coolest small clubs. It definitely has a much more intimate feel, hosting local DJs, electronic nights, indie gigs and up-and-coming artists.

Where Subway is all about mainstream party music, Sneaky Pete’s is where you’ll find the alternative crowd. Tickets range from around £6-12 depending on who’s performing.

5. The Mash House: warehouse party energy 🍸

Just behind the University of Edinburgh on Guthrie Street, The Mash House is the go-to for bigger DJ nights. It’s known for house, techno, drum & bass, and themed student events.

It has an industrial warehouse feel, giving a completely different setting from Cowgate clubs, and it’s especially popular during Freshers’ Week and society socials.

Tickets are around £8-15, with plenty of student events scheduled throughout the semester.

6. Three Sisters: the perfect in between spot 🍻

This is very popular amongst university students – it's the ideal place if your group can’t decide between a pub and a club. Also located on Cowgate, it has a huge outdoor courtyard, multiple bars, DJs later in the evening, and lots of screens for live sports.

I have a few friends who have celebrated their birthdays here, as everyone can find their own vibe without needing to move venues.

7. Whistle Binkies: a hidden gem for late night music 🎶

One of the most underrated bars, Whistle Binkies is located on South Bridge. It’s underground and stays open till late, featuring talented local bands every night.

They have a range of music from classic rock to Scottish folk, and the crowd is a fun mix of students and locals, meaning this is one of the faves if you want to have a memorable night without spending loads.

How to have the ideal student night out in Edinburgh

A classic routine my friends and I usually do is:

• 7:30pm at Spoons: get some cheap cocktails and everyone’s favourite pre-drinks whilst chatting or playing cards.
• 9pm at Stramash: watch a live band and dance to warm up for the night.
• 11:30pm onwards at Subway: dance to cheesy music and make the best student memories.

Edinburgh’s night life is incredibly student friendly in terms of price, people and location. Whatever your budget is, you will find somewhere that is right for you and your friends on your memorable night out.
