Spring Reset: How to Refresh Your Student House Without Spending a Fortune

About the author: Hi, I’m Emily Bath! I’m in my final year at Leeds Beckett University studying Media, Communication, and Cultures. I’m definitely a homebody at heart and love getting lost in a good book, but I also enjoy heading out for a hike, catching up with friends, or discovering new playlists to keep me motivated while working.
You’re going to have to trust me on this one – I’m known for being a pretty organised person. Despite being at uni, my room is usually pretty tidy. But it definitely wasn’t always like this. As a third-year student, I’ve learned the hard way, and one thing I now swear by is this: a clean space really does equal a clearer mind.

We’ve all been there. You rush out for a full day of lectures with no time to tidy, come home ready to be productive, and then immediately lose all motivation because your room is a mess. Suddenly, the bed looks way too inviting, your desk feels overwhelming, and the work can definitely wait until tomorrow…
That’s exactly why spring is the perfect time for a proper reset. With the Easter break coming up (giving you two weeks away from lectures), it’s the ideal opportunity to refresh your space, especially if you’re juggling deadlines.
Even if you’re not at uni just yet and are starting in September, a spring reset is a great way to declutter now so you’re not bringing your entire bedroom with you when you move. I quickly realised how much easier uni life is when you only bring what you actually need. A spring reset helps you do exactly that, without spending loads.
Start small (it’s still a reset) 🫧
When uni stress hits, cleaning becomes peak procrastination. But living in a shared house means it has to happen eventually.
Start with the basics: change your bedsheets, wipe down surfaces, and tackle the laundry. This is the perfect time to work through the mountain of clothes that somehow appears in the corner of your room. Hoovering your bedroom, and ideally communal areas, too, makes a massive difference. Stairs in student houses usually go unnoticed, but they collect so much dirt, so giving them a once-over is always worth it. Bonus points if you put some tunes on and turn it into a house-bonding moment.
Most student properties come with a full-sized hoover (we were blessed with a Henry), which is ideal for shared spaces. But if not, a handheld hoover is an absolute lifesaver. Even though I have both, you personally won’t catch me dragging a hoover up to my third-floor bedroom; handheld ones are perfect for quick cleans and getting into those corners that usually get missed.
Stock up without breaking the bank 🫰
A spring reset is also a great time to restock on house essentials. Places like B&M and Home Bargains are my go-to; they’re cheap, cheerful, and perfect for storage bits, cleaning supplies, and small upgrades that instantly make a space feel new.
Organising drawers and shelves immediately makes everything feel calmer. Giving everything its own place (and trying to keep it that way) helps massively for the rest of the year. This is also a great time to declutter clothes you don’t wear anymore. Vinted has been my best friend throughout uni, and I know that’s the case for a lot of students. Selling clothes you don’t need earns you a bit of extra cash for basically doing nothing, and it’s more sustainable too.
Reset your food habits 🍽️
A spring reset isn’t just about cleaning, it’s about routines too. Meal prepping isn’t just for gym-goers – it’s genuinely useful for everyone. I buy my food weekly, cook it all in one go, and suddenly my dinners are sorted.
We’ve all come home after a long day at uni with zero energy and ended up ordering a takeaway. A reset is the perfect time to break that cycle and make life easier for the future you.
Don’t forget the digital reset 📱
Spring resetting isn’t just physical; your laptop deserves one too. Organising your digital space can make uni work feel far less overwhelming.
I use Google Calendar for deadlines and to-dos, and OneDrive to separate each module into folders for lectures, seminars, readings, and assessments. Having an assessment tracker is a total game-changer, and tools like Notion are great if you prefer a fully custom digital planner. While you’re at it, clear out old files, screenshots, and your downloads folder. And change your laptop wallpaper – it sounds small, but it really does make it feel like a fresh start.
A spring reset doesn’t need to be expensive or perfect. It’s about creating a space that works for you, one that supports your routine, your wellbeing, and the rest of the academic year. Small changes now can make a big difference later.
