About the author: My name is Lucie Waring, I'm 20 years old and a 3rd year BA Digital Media and Society student at the University of Sheffield, though I'm currently on a placement year. I am originally from York, but I'm now going into my third year living in Sheffield – so I'm therefore now a self-proclaimed expert on Sheffield student life, from the best coffee shops and parks to the nightlife. While at university I am a member of many societies that I love to attend with friends and partake in fun social events!
Crookesmoor is a student-saturated suburb in the city of Sheffield; predominantly dominated by those studying at the University of Sheffield, it’s a popular choice for UoS students looking for Sheffield student accommodation, thanks to its plethora of student-friendly outlets and its handy location (being just a 10-minute walk from the Students’ Union).
If you’ve already signed on for a student house in Crookesmoor, are still searching, or already live here but haven’t yet explored the area, this guide will give you the Crookesmoor expertise you need to live like a local.
Shopping
When it comes to shopping in Crookesmoor, this residential area chooses practicality over luxury, and what it lacks in retail and clothes shops it makes up for with grocery stores.
So, if you are in need of a quick food shop for essentials, Sainsbury’s on Barber Road is just big enough for all student-friendly dinner classics (aka pesto pasta). If you fancy treating your taste buds then Beanies Wholefoods just opposite carries more sustainable options for local produce, and just a few doors down is Ozmen, a convenience store that’s open 24/7 for when you need a last-minute midnight snack and your fridge is empty.
Nightlife
You can’t mention Crookesmoor and not think of The Springvale, a pub that’s famous amongst UoS students. This is where you’ll find sports social pres swarming on a Wednesday night before they head to Foundry at the SU, and a much calmer pub quiz on a Thursday for those that aren’t suffering post-Roar.
With student deals, pool tables, karaoke, and a large outdoor screen for any popular sports games, The Springvale (or ‘Springy’) is arguably UoS students’ most popular pub – mainly because it sits conveniently amongst the student housing in Crookesmoor.
If ‘Springy’ is not your scene, The Hallamshire House offers a more relaxed opportunity to chat amongst coursemates or housemates in a cosy, local pub. They also have a pub quiz on a Monday night, with a fun and unusual Play-Doh round to test your crafting skills.
Student housing in Crookesmoor
Crookesmoor is the most popular area in Sheffield for student accommodation (according to UniHomes 2025), especially for those studying at the University of Sheffield – due to both the close proximity of UoS buildings and the liveliness of the area.
In fact, UniHomes reports that in the 25/26 letting season Crookesmoor received over twice as many searches as Broomhill (the next most popular area), becoming an overwhelmingly student-populated suburb in comparison to other residential parts of Sheffield.
The average rent in Crookesmoor (as of Nov 2025, according to UniHomes) is £135.85 per person per week, with minimum rent being £106 PPPW and maximum rent being £320 PPPW – offering a vast amount of properties for varying prices and sizes.
Food
For food in Crookesmoor, the café scene is thriving, with an array of options to choose from for a pre-lecture pick-me-up or locally-sourced baked goods. Curiositea and Coffee and Ta, both newly opened last year, as well as Chapter One (a Crookesmoor classic), are all some of the coffee shops that Crookesmoor offers.
They know their target audience too, being conveniently placed on the route to the University of Sheffield – luring in students who can’t say no to an iced coffee and a cinnamon swirl.
However, for more substantial food when you don’t have the energy to cook, you might want to head to The Greek Grill House on Barber Road. Here offers authentic Greek dishes of gyros and souvlaki at student friendly prices; I definitely recommend the chicken gyros.
Crookes Valley Park
If you aren’t already sold on Crookesmoor, Crookes Valley Park will bring you round. This is a gorgeous park centred around the Crookes Valley pond, where you’ll see the occasional wild swimmer in summer. Students living in Crookesmoor often take to this park in the warmer seasons for a budget barbecue or a post-seminar sunbathe. It’s arguably one of Sheffield’s best parks (you can read my unofficial ranking of Sheffield’s parks here), and it’s right here in Crookesmoor.
