About the author: Hi, I’m Emily Bath! I’m in my final year at Leeds Beckett University studying Media, Communication, and Cultures. I’m definitely a homebody at heart and love getting lost in a good book, but I also enjoy heading out for a hike, catching up with friends, or discovering new playlists to keep me motivated while working.

If you’re spending Christmas in Leeds this year, congratulations: you’ve picked one of the best cities in the North for festive activities. Leeds in December is basically a big cosy hug… with a side of chaos. Good chaos though. The kind where you willingly stand in a 20-minute queue all for a pot of Christmas crumble that will absolutely be worth it. So, let me tell you how you can make the most of Christmas in Leeds as a student on a student budget.

The Christmas Markets 🎄

Let’s start with the obvious star: the Leeds Christmas Market. Spread across the city centre, it’s packed with food stands that will 100% ruin your “I’m saving money this month” plan.

Every corner smells like something you need immediately. There’s everything from classic Christmas treats like hot chocolate and crepes, all the way to Kebab Boys, mac and cheese, traditional Indian food, and, of course, the legendary crumble stand that everyone raves about every year!

If you’re feeling extra festive, the Ski Bar is the place to be. Think heaters, fairy lights, Christmas music, and the cosiest atmosphere to enjoy a drink in hand. The markets also come with the ice rink, which will very quickly reveal which of your housemates can balance… and which one absolutely can't. Add in the fair rides and you've got the full festive experience.

And once you’ve eaten your bodyweight in carbs, head over to the big wheel outside the Art Gallery. The views are stunning, especially with the city lights below. Plus, it’s elite entertainment if one of your housemates is terrified of heights.

The Northern Lights of Leeds 🌟

If you want something that actually feels magical, make your way out to Temple Newsam for the festive light trail, also known as the Northern Lights of Leeds.

It’s one of the most impressive immersive light walks in the city, where every single corner is ridiculously photo-worthy. It’s the perfect spot for wholesome housemate bonding, or simply proving to yourself that you are doing something other than procrastinating uni work.

Shopping in Leeds 🛍️

Back in town, you can feel the festive energy, the lights, the music, the smell of food everywhere… it’s impossible not to feel Christmassy.

Briggate is draped in lights, Central Arcade looks stunning top to bottom, and Trinity goes all-out with huge decorations and seasonal displays. My favourite, the Corn Exchange, is already gorgeous all year round, but at Christmas it becomes a full festive sanctuary. Every weekend, you’ll find mini markets selling handmade gifts and customisable trinkets, perfect for presents, or to treat yourself.

If you need warmth and a proper indoor shopping day, White Rose Shopping Centre goes full Christmas mode too. It’s absolutely worth the bus ride; the decorations are huge, the vibes are great, and it’s the perfect place for last-minute shopping without freezing your fingers off.

Leeds hits different at Christmas 🎁

Whether you're ice skating, wandering through glowing light trails, inhaling crumble like it’s your full personality, or dragging your housemates around town purely for the festive vibes, Leeds in December just hits different.

It makes the whole uni experience feel a little more magical, and it is the perfect break from deadlines and group projects.

Wrap up warm, gather your housemates, and soak up every bit of Christmas in the city; Leeds at Christmas really is something special.
