About the author: Hi, I’m Emily Bath! I’m in my final year at Leeds Beckett University studying Media, Communication, and Cultures. I’m definitely a homebody at heart and love getting lost in a good book, but I also enjoy heading out for a hike, catching up with friends, or discovering new playlists to keep me motivated while working.

We can all agree that the Christmas break is long, cosy, and very well deserved. But coming back to uni in January can feel a bit strange. It’s colder, darker, deadlines are back on the horizon, and it can feel like ages since you last sat in a lecture theatre.

That’s where Refreshers comes in. Think of it as the calmer, more-relaxed cousin of Freshers’ Week. There’s no September chaos, no frantic campus map-checking, and usually no freshers’ flu either, just thicker coats, quieter campuses, and the heating permanently turned up. Whether you went home for the entire Christmas break or stayed put, Leeds Refreshers is the perfect excuse to reset, meet people (again), and gently slide back into the new semester.

Refreshers Fairs and SU events

January usually kicks off with Refreshers Fairs, and honestly, they’re one of the best ways to get yourself back onto campus. Most Leeds universities run their own versions, including Leeds Beckett’s Winter Freshers Fair, the University of Leeds’ Fresh Start Festival, and Trinity’s Refreshers events, all taking place in the first couple of weeks back.

They bring back that “new semester” energy, without the crowds and stress of September. It’s also the ideal time to finally sign up for something you kept saying you’d do last term but never quite got around to. New year, new timetable, new excuse.

Refreshers is especially great for society tasters. If you felt too nervous to join something in September, you’re definitely not alone. By now, you’ve seen societies in action, heard friends talk about them (or have read our Content Ambassador Sophie’s blog post on what she wishes she had known about societies), and maybe even wished you’d given one a go. January is your chance to jump in without feeling behind. Societies expect new starters at this point and are usually more than happy to welcome fresh faces.

Social events (without the pressure)

January social life hits differently. You know your housemates properly now, you actually know where you’re going, and no one’s pretending a thin jacket is suitable winter clothing. Refreshers still brings plenty of events across the city, but they tend to feel more relaxed and familiar.

Venues put on themed socials, student-friendly events, and weekly favourites that help you ease back into routines, including Refreshers at Be at One, the Bobby’s Disco relaunch, and themed nights like Bollywood Night at Revolution de Cuba (perfect if you want to mix things up a bit). Picking one or two things a week is more than enough to stay social without burning out.

If you prefer chilled plans, you’ll never hear a bad word about Rita’s. With their 24-inch share pizzas, live music, karaoke, and leopard print pool tables, it makes it perfect for a proper housemate night.

Things to do that aren’t just nights out

Refreshers definitely isn’t all about going out, especially when it’s freezing outside. Leeds has loads of winter-friendly activities that are perfect for low-effort social plans.

Left Bank Leeds is a great place to start, with events running throughout January. From Wake Up & Yoga sessions on Wednesday mornings to vintage kilo sales like Worth the Weight, it’s a great spot to ease back into Leeds life. There are also cinemas like Everyman and Vue for budget-friendly movie nights, plus endless cosy coffee spots around Hyde Park, Headingley, and the city centre for catch-ups.

January is also prime time for resetting routines. Whether that’s getting back into the gym, planning study sessions, or just pretending you’ve got your life together by setting alarms before midday, Refreshers gives you the motivation boost to start afresh.

Thinking ahead: housing for next year

The new year is also when a lot of students start thinking about housing for next year. January is a good time to explore your options before everything fills up.

Housing fairs often pop up around this time, giving you the chance to chat to providers and understand what’s available. UniHomes is especially handy here, showing student homes with inclusive bills, meaning one less thing to think about while you’re already getting back into uni life.

Finding your rhythm again

Refreshers isn’t about icebreakers or forcing friendships; it’s about finding your rhythm again. Leeds makes that easy. Between the events, societies, social spaces, and constant buzz around the city, January doesn’t have to feel dull. It can actually be fun, motivating, and the perfect fresh start.

So, grab your housemates, wrap up warm, and give Refreshers a chance. You might be surprised how quickly Leeds starts feeling like home again.
