Portsmouth student life

About the author: Hi, I’m Karishma Taank! I’m in my final year studying Pharmacy at the University of Portsmouth. I love getting lost in a good book, binge watching movies with my housemates, and taking seaside walks with a coffee in hand.

Now that spring’s arrived in Portsmouth and we can begin to enjoy longer days and warmer weather, there’s no better time to head outside and make the most of the city’s coastal charm. From scenic beach walks and open green spaces to lively group activities and water sports, Portsmouth offers plenty of ways to enjoy the fresh air.

Whether you’re after something active, relaxing or somewhere in between, there's plenty of outdoors to explore in Portsmouth this summer.

Southsea Common

Southsea Common is a go-to spot as soon as the weather improves. With open green spaces and coastal views, it’s ideal for last minute, post-lecture plans with your housemates. Bring a ball along for a casual game of football, set up a rounders match, or just stretch out on the grass with a picnic.

It’s also a great place to mark the start of spring with something a bit different; think a themed “Bloom Bash” picnic with bouquet making and a makeshift picky bits spread. As the sun sets over the Solent, it’s hard to beat the atmosphere, making it a perfect low-cost way to enjoy the lighter evenings.

Portsdown Hill

For some of the best views over the city, drive up to Portsdown Hill. Overlooking Portsmouth and the coastline, it’s an ideal setting for a relaxed evening with friends.

Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and settle in to watch the orange sunset set over Portsmouth, and make sure you look out for Spinnaker tower! If you’re feeling peckish for some warm food, you can grab a bite from Mick’s Monster Burgers, a popular local spot known for its generous portions.

Farlington Marshes

If you’re after a quieter escape, Farlington Marshes offers a peaceful break from the city. The 2.5 mile path along the sea wall is flat and easy, making it perfect for a relaxed walk, a light jog, or any dog-friendly outing. It’s also one of the best birdwatching spots on the south coast.

In the spring, the marshes are buzzing with life, with varying species such as brent geese, waders, and even birds of prey passing through during migration season. Alongside the wildlife, the area has a fascinating history, with land reclaimed in the 1700s and subtle traces of its World War II past still visible today.

Clarence Pier

For a classic seaside day out, Clarence Pier is hard to beat. Set right on the beachfront, it’s packed with arcades, rides and traditional pier attractions, perfect for a fun, slightly competitive day out with friends.

One of the highlights is Treasure Island Adventure Golf, an 18-hole mini golf course with a lively pirate theme. It’s ideal for groups, whether you’re planning something with your housemates or looking for an easy weekend activity. Even better, student tickets make it an affordable option, so you can enjoy a full afternoon of entertainment without stretching your budget.

Water sports in Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a fantastic destination for water sports, offering something for everyone – whether you’re a complete beginner or looking for something more adventurous. Around Langstone Harbour, the calm, sheltered waters are perfect for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing, ideal if you’re after a more-relaxed way to get out on the water. It’s a great option for group outings where you can explore at your own pace.

If you’re looking to take things up a notch, there’s plenty more on offer across the city, including sailing, windsurfing, rowing and open-water swimming. For adrenaline seekers, activities like high-speed boat rides and kitesurfing make Portsmouth an exciting spot for a more action packed day by the sea.

With its mix of green spaces, gorgeous coastline and student-friendly activities, Portsmouth is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors this spring and summer. Whether you’re planning a last minute picnic, an active day out, or a relaxed evening watching the sunset, there’s something to suit every mood and budget.
