Portsmouth student life

About the author: Hi, I’m Karishma Taank! I’m in my final year studying Pharmacy at the University of Portsmouth. I love getting lost in a good book, binge watching movies with my housemates, and taking seaside walks with a coffee in hand.

Being a seaside town, Portsmouth does its ice cream vans, café spots, and brunch places best. But it’s specifically these Portsmouth brunch spots that top the charts – because who doesn't love a stack of pancakes? Especially on a sunny (but slightly frosty) Sunday where you can easily head to the beach and walk off all the extra syrup you ordered!

Garage Lounge 🥞

I have to start off with the infamous Garage Lounge in Southsea. This place is near and dear to my heart – it’s hosted many of my girls’ brunches, as well as being the place I take my parents to when they come visit me before they head off on home.

If I’m looking for pancakes, Garage Lounge is the place to go. I tend to share the pancakes and berries with another dish so I get the best of both sweet and savoury, because why should we have to choose just one?

For Marmite lovers, I couldn’t recommend the mushroom Marmite on sourdough enough, especially with extra halloumi added on top. They manage to get the perfect ratio of umami, salty Marmite with creamy white sauce. Their comforting chai latte with an extra shot of coffee is always on my Garage Lounge order, too.

Fuegos Street 🍵

A fan favourite for their birria tacos and burritos, Fuegos Street has now recently created an extensive brunch menu! Their French toast is perfectly topped with mascarpone, berries and granola. Plus extra bonus points for how beautifully presented it is and that it’s not too overpoweringly sweet in the way that French toast can be sometimes.

I went here for a hangover brunch with my home friends so a round of matcha was necessary to perk us up for the day, specifically their Spanish-style matcha. It was quite sweet so not the best if you prefer authentic matcha, but we were all pleased with the choice.

Farm Kitchen 🥐

If you’re after a cosy brunch spot with a bit of character, Farm Kitchen is a must visit. This family-run café serves up a delicious mix of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours, and the Mediterranean breakfast is definitely one to try. Make sure you try their rich farm hot chocolate; it hits differently on a chilly day. And just across the way, their bakery is stocked with Mediterranean-inspired cookies and muffins, ideal for grabbing something sweet to enjoy later.

Offbeet 🫜

As the weather starts warming up, Offbeet is the ideal spot for a post-run brunch on a sunny weekend. Their plant-based menu is all about tasty, healthy bites that leave you satisfied. They have a zero-waste ethos which they utilise through their seasonal menu, ensuring high-quality meals that you will never get bored of.

It is more than a café as it doubles as a community space where you can get involved in yoga and wellness classes, food events, and even cookery workshops.

Watch out for their daily stories on their Instagram to catch their latest special bakes. It’s no wonder The Times named it one of the top vegetarian spots in the UK.

The Canteen 🍳

If you fancy breakfast with a view, The Canteen is the place to be. Serving from 8am to 11:45am, it’s right on the beach. If you manage to grab an outdoor seat on a sunny morning, the sea view makes it even better; just watch out for the splashes when there is a high tide!

Their menu has plenty of standout dishes, but the Canteen Veggie Stack is a favourite with truffle mushrooms, crispy potato rösti, sausages, avocado, and a perfectly-poached egg. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, go for the Canteen Classic Waffle topped with Nutella, bananas, and seasonal berries, and maybe finish things off with a scoop of Jude’s ice cream.

There’s also cosy indoor seating for those rainy Portsmouth mornings, so it’s a win either way. This is one of my favourite places for hot matcha with coconut milk, guaranteed no bitterness

The Southsea Deli 🥪

Mainly known for their fresh and filling sandwiches, their Sunday brunch menu is what we are here for. Their Greek beans on toast is wholesome and comforting, while the breakfast crostini combines sourdough toast with Isle of Wight tomatoes, rocket and a drizzle of olive oil for a light, Mediterranean-inspired start to the day.

Special mentions 🌟

A few special mentions of places to check out would be Panero Lounge on Palmerston Road (especially for an iced latte) and Cosy Club in Gunwharf Quays (their light chai granola bowl will fuel your shopping trip!).
