Portsmouth student life

About the author: Hi, I’m Karishma Taank! I’m in my final year studying Pharmacy at the University of Portsmouth. I love getting lost in a good book, binge watching movies with my housemates, and taking seaside walks with a coffee in hand.

Being a busy university city, there’s no shortage of fun spots for a night out in Portsmouth, no matter your vibe. Whether you’re into a ‘for the plot’ night out, a competitive game of cards in a pub, or a fancy cocktail bar, Portsmouth has something for everyone. Here's a breakdown of the best places to go out with your uni friends.

City centre hotspots

If you’re heading into the city centre, the main spot for a crazy night out has to be The Astoria. I’m talking £2 drinks on a Friday and loads of space to dance – there’s Tokyo Joe’s, the terrace, an upper floor, and a basement, meaning there’s a room for each genre. It doesn’t matter how varied you and your friends’ Spotify Blend is, everyone will know the words to the song somewhere in The Astoria!

Near The Astoria you have The Dockyard, pub by day and dance floor by night. Their popular Connection Indie Night on Thursdays guarantees you get to hear Mr Brightside or a throwback Paramore song.

If that’s not your vibe, head over to Tokyo Joe’s on for Fiesta Thursdays, Portsmouth’s biggest Latin and international beats – you’ll usually find me here. Their next few nights out include an Afro Caribbean Y2K night and a Bad Bunny Tribute night – and after his Superbowl performance, who isn’t going?

Pubs and pints

Located in the heart of Portsmouth’s student housing on Albert Road in Southsea, you’ll find a more laid-back night out at The One Eyed Dog. This pub is perfect for playing a game of pool, enjoying a pint, and hitting the dance floor later on in the evening. The DJ keeps the vibe going ‘til 1am, playing everything from throwback anthems to the latest chart hits. It’s the ideal mix of chill pub vibes with a touch of the night-out scene, and the crowd is always friendly and packed with fellow students.

Just a short walk away, The Honest Politician offers an even more chilled out night. With its affordable drinks and cosy atmosphere, you’ll soon find yourself as a regular. The pub’s pool tables are always a hit, offering the perfect mix of casual fun and banter, and the pub also keeps things lively with live sports on the screens, making it an ideal hangout for those who want to watch the match while sipping on cheap drinks.

O’Neill’s is the place to catch up with your friends after lectures. It’s always an easy last-minute and affordable place with their £3.50 cocktails and £3.50 pints from 5-8pm, although you can also go for a more casual bottomless brunch here for £34 a person.

Palmerston Road

Palmerston Road is a well-known place for a Saturday night, mainly thanks to the nearby Spoons. That being said, Go Rogue is the ultimate destination for a trifecta of fun, with their arcade, karaoke and club under one roof. Whether you’re in the mood for some nostalgic gaming, scream/singing to the latest Taylor Swift album, or hitting the dance floor ‘til it’s time for post-night out chips, it’s the newest place to try out.

Gunwharf Quays

Heading towards Gunwharf Quays? Look no further than Slug and Lettuce for their 2-for-1 drinks, which have been a frequent staple for girly evenings in my household – especially for a cheeky bottomless brunch if we’re celebrating someone’s birthday!

Looking for something a bit classier for a date or for an excuse to dress up with a friend? Then All Bar One has you sorted. Some of their signature cocktails include a mango picante (for all you tequila lovers), an elderflower and cucumber fizz (the ideal summer cocktail), and a salted caramel old fashioned (for a spiced-up classic).

Overall, I’d say that there’s a night out for everyone in Portsmouth; whether you want to host pres and Uber to Astoria or you want a pub and cards evening at O’Neills, you now have multiple options to offer the group chat!
