About the author: Hello! My name is Madelaine Lee but I usually go by Maddie. I am currently a 2nd year Fine Art student at the University of Edinburgh. I love doing things that are hands on – whether it's art and crafts, gardening, painting, pottery, you name it! I am also very much a nature girl and love going on walks and hikes. My art studio is where I spend most of my time, but if not you will probably see me dancing or ice skating too. I can't wait to share the ins and outs of university life with all of you!

Valentine’s Day 2026 is coming up soon, and whether you are coupled up, casually dating, or single and just want a wholesome day with your friends, there’s something for everyone to do! It doesn't have to always be fine dining or getting overpriced roses. There’s still so much you can do on a student budget whilst still having a fun, cozy and genuinely meaningful day.

Cosy up with a movie night 🎬

One of the popular and easiest options is a movie night in someone’s flat. Connect to Netflix or Prime and pick a theme! This could be romcoms, early 2000s classics or Studio Ghibli. Share a blanket between all of you, and if you’re feeling extra, grab some snacks and pastries from Lidl. Microwave some popcorn and enjoy your night with your loved ones. You could also have a sleepover after, too!

Embrace the outdoors 🌲

If you would like to spend the daytime outside, a walk or a park date is definitely an underrated classic. You could also go for a colour-themed walk, where each of you take photos of a specific colour throughout your walk out and then go back through your camera roll (now filled with that one colour) afterwards – it’s a super fun way of making walks much more fun and entertaining.

Most towns and cities in the UK have at least one decent green space and are completely open to the public. Bring some hot chocolate in a flask and go for a wander out. If the weather isn’t too great, even a short walk out feels like a win.

Bake up a storm 🧑‍🍳

Something me and my girls love to do is bake and cook together! This is another budget-friendly option that feels way more special than eating out, with no pressure to attempt anything fancy! Try out making homemade heart-shaped pizzas or cinnamon rolls for the ultimate Valentine’s Day treat.

Cooking and baking together gives you something to do, as well as something to laugh about when it goes wrong. You could place some candles around the kitchen and put on some romantic music, and suddenly your kitchen looks like a personalised romantic dining room.

Go the (long) distance 📱

If you and your partner are long distance, or if you just aren’t able to see each other in person on Valentine’s Day, a virtual date can still work! Have an online film marathon together, cook the same meal at the same time, or call each other all day long. You could also go old school and write letters then post them to each other!

Valentine’s Day does not have to be something extravagant but more about making time for each other, even if that is through a screen.

Self care counts 🧘‍♀️

If you’re single you could spend Valentine’s Day 2026 with your friends, but you could also spend this day to treat yourself, too! Go for a sunset or sunrise hunt – hike up a hill and sit by the side watching the sun over the town. Have a solo date and get your favourite takeaway, then watch a comfort film without anyone else’s judgement. You could also try searching for local communities, as some cities may have groups where they host public events happening on Valentine’s Day. Alternatively, try out volunteering – food banks, charity shops, and community kitchens often welcome help.

Take it easy 💙

Finally, remember that Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a big romantic spectacle. Writing a sweet note, making a shared playlist, or crafting a silly card can mean so much more than an expensive gift. And for the single people out there, don’t feel left out – Galentine’s and Palentine’s are underrated and you should definitely celebrate your friendships, too!

At the end of the day, most people aren’t expecting luxury. We value effort, thoughtful plans, and time together. A bit of creativity will always matter more than the amount of money spent. You can always do Valentine’s Day in your own style, and there is absolutely no right or wrong way to do it!
