So, you’re looking for a place in Leeds to call home while you study. Well look no further. If you’re a student in the city, chances are you’ve heard of Woodhouse. Known for being a popular student area, situated right next to major universities and only a short walk away from the city centre, it's the perfect choice for anyone wanting to start their student life in Leeds. Read on to discover what makes the area of Woodhouse a student favourite.

The location

Woodhouse is a great choice for those wanting to be close to several Leeds universities. The University of Leeds is located at the heart of Woodhouse so you're only a stone’s throw away from campus. Similarly, it's also close to neighbouring universities such as Leeds Beckett (City Campus) and Leeds Arts University — making it a convenient location for many students in Leeds.

Woodhouse also has great rail connections, with it being roughly a 20-minute walk from Leeds Train Station and a 25-minute walk from Burley Park Station.

Student housing

When it comes to student housing, the stats speak for themselves – during the 25/26 letting season, Woodhouse was the third most-popular area in Leeds for students looking for student housing. For those looking for affordability, Woodhouse is also a great choice for this marker. The average rent price (according to UniHomes August 2025) is £145.45 per person per week, with prices ranging from £287.50 to £103 PPPW.

The nightlife

As it's a highly student-populated area, it's sure to have a booming nightlife. With its location nearing the end of the Otley run, the city’s famous pub crawl, it is home to many popular pubs including The Eldon, The Library, Old Bar in Leeds University Student Union, and The Packhorse. For clubs and live entertainment, Woodhouse has easy links to the city centre so you're not too far away after a night out.

The food

Craving a snack after a night out? Need a quick energy boost in between lectures? Woodhouse Lane has you covered with a variety of restaurants, takeaways and corner shops. Popular places along the road include dumplings and noodles from Mr Su’s, chicken and chips from Flames, and Bakery 164 (whose freshly-baked sandwiches are a firm student favourite).

It's also home to many cafe and brunch spots, including popular café Coffee on the Crescent that sits at the top of Woodhouse, nearing Hyde Park. This independent coffee shop is well-known among Leeds students, sourcing coffee from local suppliers whilst also selling the work of talented artists in the area. Multiple Caffè Nero branches can also be seen scattered around the University of Leeds campus so you’re sure to have your coffee fix.

The parks

A standout place to visit in the area is Woodhouse Moor (more commonly known as Hyde Park), a large open park space which connects to other student-populated areas such as Hyde Park, Headingley and Burley.

The park features lots of green space perfect for picnics and downtime from lectures, a skatepark and a multi-use-games-area (MUGA) for basketball or football matches with friends. There is also a tennis court which is free to access – make sure to pre-book online! The park is great for running lovers, as it holds weekly park run socials where people can enjoy morning runs together.

During summer, Woodhouse Moor can get packed with many students trying to soak up as much sun during lecture breaks. If you’re looking for a more quieter park then St Georges Field is a great choice. Situated right on the University of Leeds campus, it's one of the underrated spots in the uni. The area is rich in history, with it previously being the Leeds General Cemetery. This green space is also home to an array of wildlife – if you're passing by make sure to look out for the rabbits and squirrels!
