About the author: My name is Helena Watson and I’m a 19 year old Criminology and Criminal Justice student studying full time at Swansea University. I have a wide range of interests stretching from sports and fitness to testing out cute little cafés around my area. I am also a proud women's rugby player who plays for Swansea University and for my local club back home in Stavanger, Norway.

If you’re heading to Swansea for university, chances are you’ve already heard about Uplands; it's mainly known for its lively atmosphere, strong sense of community, and perfect balance between study and social life. Uplands has definitely earned its place as one of the city’s most popular student areas, and chances are you’ll end up agreeing with this from the very moment you start at Swansea University.

Living in Uplands 🏠

During the 26/27 letting season, Uplands was the second most popular area on the UniHomes website, just behind Brynmill. That alone should tell you how loved the area is among students. With an average of six bedrooms per house, it’s perfect for larger friendship groups looking to live together, allowing students to live in a sociable and comfortable shared living space.

With regards to cost, Uplands offers a range of options to suit different student budgets. Average rent sits at £131.84 per person per week according to UniHomes (April 2026), with prices starting as low as £88 and going up to £274 pppw depending on the property. This flexibility means whether you’re looking for something affordable and cozy or a more modern and spacious house, you’ll find something that works for everyone.

Every Uplands student house you see on the UniHomes website comes with bills included, too, which means you don't have to worry about setting up your utilities and can focus on studying (or socialising) stress-free. What’s around? 🤔

Its location is one of Uplands’ biggest advantages. Situated just a short distance from Swansea University’s Singleton Campus, it’s an easy walk or cycle for most students. It also sits perfectly between the city centre and the beach, making it ideal for those who want quick and easy access to both. Whether you’re heading into town for shopping or going down to Swansea Bay for a study break by the sea, everything is within reach.

When it comes to local amenities, Uplands really delivers. The area is packed with convenience stores, small supermarkets, pharmacies, and essential services, meaning you rarely need to travel far for everyday needs and wants. There’s also a great mix of independent shops and well-known options, giving the area a character that feels both practical and unique.

Food & drink 🍳

The food and drink options are where Uplands' true colours really come out. The area is known for its diverse range of cafés, takeaways, and restaurants that cater to all tastes and budgets. Whether you’re after a quick bite between lectures, a weekend brunch with friends, or a late-night takeaway after a night out, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Key cafés in Uplands consist of places like Saint Hugo; they’re on the slightly pricier side of things, but their drinks are worth it every now and again if the student budget can allow it. However, if you’re looking for a slightly cheaper and more aesthetic place, Crafty Smuggler is my go to, with their iced drinks being freshly made and served in a clear can. Definitely a must try.

Nightlife 🪩

Nightlife in Uplands is where it is at almost every night of the week. While it may not be as club-heavy as the city centre, it offers a more relaxed (but equally enjoyable) night out. Think cosy pubs, lively bars, and venues with live music and quiz nights. It’s the kind of place where you can go out for “just one drink” and end up staying all evening.

For bigger nights out, Swansea city centre is just a short taxi or bus ride away, giving you the best of both worlds. To find out more about Swansea nights out, read my blog post on the best student nights out in Swansea for 2026.

How easy is it to travel to and from Uplands? 🚶‍➡️

Transport links in and around Uplands are reliable and student-friendly. There are regular bus routes that connect the area to both university campuses and the city centre, making it easy to get around without a car. For those who prefer walking or cycling, most key locations are within a manageable distance. This adds to Uplands’ appeal, especially for second-year students moving out of accommodation and into shared housing for the first time.

Uplands stands out because it has the perfect balance. It’s lively without being overwhelming, convenient without feeling crowded, and social without losing its sense of community. With strong demand, varied housing options, and everything you need on your doorstep, it’s easy to see why so many students choose to live there.

If you’re looking for a student area that offers great value, a buzzing social scene, and a location that keeps you connected to everything Swansea has to offer, Uplands should definitely be on your radar.
