About the author: My name is Helena Watson and I’m a 19 year old Criminology and Criminal Justice student studying full time at Swansea University. I have a wide range of interests stretching from sports and fitness to testing out cute little cafés around my area. I am also a proud women's rugby player who plays for Swansea University and for my local club back home in Stavanger, Norway.

If you’re new to Swansea or are planning on applying to Swansea University and are wondering what a proper student night out in Swansea looks like, you’ve come to the right place. Swansea might be smaller than other uni cities, but when it comes to nightlife, Swansea knows what it's doing.

And don't worry, you’ll figure out nights out in Swansea quickly. There are so many options for fun nights out that within a couple of weeks you’ll have your own routine, your own favourite bars, and probably a few unforgettable memories from Wind Street.

A couple of bars to start the night?

Uplands is where most people go for either a couple of chill pints with friends or to start their night off right, not only because it’s home to some of the best bars in Swansea but also because it’s within walking distance of most of the second and third year student houses in Swansea (don't worry if you live on campus, though, as there are loads of buses and places to get an Uber just outside the main bars). You’ll tell yourself you’re only going for a few chilled drinks, but Uplands has a way of turning “one pint” into a full pub crawl.

Noah’s Yard

For a relaxed but classy night in Uplands, Noah's Yard has a cosy, indie vibe with fairy lights, good music and enough seating that you can have a conversation before the night gets loud. It feels slightly more sophisticated than your average student bar, however the prices are still reasonable for if you're on a student budget; you can expect pints to be around £3 to £4 and cocktails between £5 and £7.

Uplands Tavern

The Uplands Tavern is a classic staple, though it’s louder and more lively than Noah’s. It’s big, busy and always full of students playing pool or drinking pint upon pint. Student deals here are ideal if you’re trying to make your money last, so be sure to bring your student ID to make sure you get those extra pennies off – pints often are priced around £2.50 to £3 for students, and there are shot deals like three for £5.

Jack Murphys

A little further down the street is Jack Murphys, which is where the night can properly begin. It’s always packed and buzzing, and it’s usually the point where someone suggests heading into town. You can expect music, standing tables and a lot of “just one more pint” before leaving. Student nights bring £3–£4 pints and 2-for-£10 cocktails, while at weekends the prices sit around £5–£6 a pint and up to £10 for cocktails.

Whitez

After you’ve had a couple in Jacks, head just a few doors down where you’ll find Whitez, a pool bar with a chill vibe where you can hang with friends, listen to music and show off your pool skills. The vibe is chaotic and loud, and it’s known for some cheap drinks. With £2–£3 drinks and shots from about £1.50 on student nights, it’s practically a Swansea tradition.

Wednesday nights are always spent on Wind Street

By Wednesday, Wind Street in the city centre becomes the main event. If you only go out one night a week, make it Wednesday. The whole street fills with students and every bar and club has deals to pull you in.

While having fun on a night out, make sure you’re being as safe and responsible as possible at the same time. There are always police posted at the top and bottom of Wind Street for if you ever need them, and there’s also a health station located at the back at Wind Street for those who are in need or know of friends in need. Those there are always willing to help students if at any point throughout the night.

Jack Murphys (again)

The Jack Murphys on Wind Street (yes, there are two locations in Swansea – it’s just that good!) feels more like a club, with DJs and a packed dance floor. Drinks on student night can be as low as £2.50 to £3.50 (and they’ve recently added a 99p bar in the basement), though at weekends prices rise to £5 or more. It’s perfect for those nights out at the end of the month where money is a little tight but you still want an amazing night out.

Bonnie Rogues

Bonnie Rogues is a lively club where things get chaotic in the best way. It’s cheesy, crowded and always a good time, and it's always the place to be if you want a little bit of white girl music and want to sing and dance the night away. They do 2-for-£8 cocktails and £2.50 shots mid-week, compared to around £10 per cocktail on weekends.

Popworld

Popworld is a must for Wednesdays, especially if you love throwbacks and singing like no one’s listening. It’s popular with those who attend society socials as well as those who like to start the night off with cheap drinks and good vibes before heading off to Bambu to spend the rest of the night.

Bambu Beach Bar

Bambu brings the full club energy with neon lights, big dance floors and drinks that are around £3–£4 on student nights. There are three main floors to Bambu, all with a different vibe. The ground floor is a chill area with indoor seating, a photo booth and a private back room with games and a fun atmosphere. When you go upstairs you enter the main area, where you’ll find a dance floor with a DJ booth as well as two bars (meaning easy access to cheap drinks to keep you going all night long). If you’re feeling tired or want a place where you can sit and have a late-night catch up with friends, try the third floor where there’s seating everywhere (be warned though, as it's always packed).

Thursday's Sin Savers, for if Wednesday wasn’t enough

For those who are unable to make it out on Wednesday or are craving another night of fun, there are always Thursdays, or Sin Savers at Sin City. Every Swansea student ends up here at some point; it’s busy and somehow always worth it. With three rooms of music and drinks from about £2–£3 on Thursdays, it’s one of the cheapest big nights out you’ll find. Entry is usually around £3–£5 with a student ticket, though weekends can push closer to £10. Be sure to grab a ticket before you go so you don't have to wait in the long line.

The best thing about Swansea nightlife is that it doesn’t have to be expensive. A good mid-week night out can cost £20 if you’re sensible, while weekends can easily creep up to £40+. Either way, bring your student ID and personal ID, prepare to bump into everyone you know, and accept that most nights out will end with a late-night takeaway from any of the kebab shops up and down Wind Street. No matter where you end up, it’ll always be a night you won't regret.
