About the author: About the author: My name is Helena Watson and I’m a 19 year old Criminology and Criminal Justice student studying full time at Swansea University. I have a wide range of interests stretching from sports and fitness to testing out cute little cafés around my area. I am also a proud women's rugby player who plays for Swansea University and for my local club back home in Stavanger, Norway.
Student life in Swansea is about much more than lectures and the library, and cafés quickly become part of the routine. Whether you're meeting friends for brunch, looking for a change of scenery while studying, or simply taking a break from busy student life, Swansea has plenty of independent cafés to suit every mood.
From cosy corners in Uplands to waterfront views at the Marina, here are some of the best Swansea cafés that students keep coming back to.
More than just a Swansea coffee stop
1. Hoogah Café
Located in the heart of Uplands, Hoogah has become one of the most popular cafés among Swansea students. If you live in Uplands, chances are you've visited more than once (if you want to know even more about Uplands' food and drink options, check out my guide to Uplands here). With Swansea University’s Singleton Campus only a short walk away, it is a convenient stop before lectures, after seminars, or during a well-earned weekend break.
The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming, with plenty of students catching up with friends, working on assignments, or enjoying a relaxed brunch. Their menu includes everything from pastries and toasties to full breakfasts, but one thing that students keep coming back for is their famous cinnamon roll. Served warm, it can be topped with either fruit compote or Nutella and nuts, making it the perfect treat alongside a coffee.
Drinks are usually around £3-4, while most meals range from £8-12, making it a popular choice for students looking to treat themselves without stretching the weekly budget.

2. Crafty Smuggler Coffee House
For students looking for somewhere quieter, Crafty Smuggler offers a completely different atmosphere. Located near the city centre, this independent coffee house has become a favourite among those who enjoy slower mornings and peaceful study sessions.
Its cosy interior and relaxed environment make it ideal for escaping the distractions of student houses or busy campus spaces. The coffee is some of the best in Swansea, and there is also a selection of pastries and light bites available. One thing that makes Crafty Smuggler stand out is its iced drinks, which are freshly made and served in cans, giving them a unique touch that students love. Drinks are generally priced around £3-4, making it an affordable option for regular visits.
Whether you are working through coursework or simply enjoying some time away from the crowds, Crafty Smuggler is one of Swansea’s hidden gems.

3. BaseKamp
Situated in the city centre, BaseKamp has quickly become a favourite among students who appreciate good coffee and modern surroundings. Its bright and contemporary atmosphere makes it equally suitable for brunch with friends or an afternoon spent catching up on university work.
Speciality coffees are usually priced between £3-5, while pastries and breakfast options remain reasonably priced. The café has a relaxed feel and plenty of seating, making it easy to spend a couple of hours there without feeling rushed. Another reason students love BaseKamp is the super friendly resident dog, who is always happy to receive a few strokes while you wait to order. It adds to the welcoming atmosphere and makes every visit feel that little bit more personal.
Its central location also makes it a convenient stop after shopping trips or before heading home after a day on campus.

4. The Observatory
Located on Swansea Marina, The Observatory is one of the city’s most unique cafés. Housed inside a former observatory tower, it offers beautiful views across Swansea Bay and towards Mumbles, providing a completely different atmosphere from the busy student areas around Singleton and Uplands.
The menu includes coffee, brunch dishes and light lunches, with most meals costing between £9-15. Although it may not become an everyday coffee stop, it is perfect for special occasions, family visits, or catching up with friends in a more relaxed setting. During the summer months, the outdoor seating area becomes one of the best places in Swansea to sit back, enjoy the sunshine and take in the views towards Mumbles.

5. Fika
If you prefer a quieter environment, Fika is well worth a visit. Located in the mumbles, it offers a calm atmosphere and minimalist design, making it popular with students looking for somewhere peaceful to study or unwind.
Coffee is generally priced around £3-4, and there is a good selection of cakes, pastries and light lunch options available. Their bagels have become a particular favourite among regular visitors and are perfect for a quick lunch between lectures. Combined with the relaxed setting and welcoming atmosphere, it is easy to see why many students become regulars.
