The week you have been anticipating and (hopefully) saving for all summer since results day is soon approaching… Freshers' Week! Otherwise known as Welcome Week, this is the period of time once you have moved into your new accommodation at your university city before lectures begin, to help you settle in, explore what there is to offer, meet new people, and ultimately have the best time before you lock in with your degree.

Each university and city's Freshers’ Week varies on activities, so this guide will help you gauge an idea of what to expect from Sheffield Freshers’ Week 2026, so you can make the most of it and start your student life on the right foot.

Key university-focused Sheffield fresher events

Often during Freshers Week, both Sheffield universities will hold activity fairs in their Students' Unions. These can include generic ‘Freshers fairs’ where local and national companies hold pop-ups, offering out leaflets with student deals, freebies, and fun activities. UniHomes will feature at Sheffield Hallam’s fair on Thursday 17th September, so don’t hesitate to get one step ahead on next year’s accommodation here!

However, a key fair for new students to attend is the societies fair. Societies fairs display all the different university clubs and sports teams you can join - from ukulele societies and arts and crafts clubs to tennis teams. Pretty much any interest or society you can think of will be here for you to meet the committee, pick up a flyer, and ultimately decide what new extracurricular activity you want to join.

Following on from society fairs, often in Freshers’ Week, clubs and sports teams will host ‘Give it a Go’ sessions, a free taster event to test out if you are a pro footballer or have a secret hidden musical talent that is going to be unlocked at university. These are also a great way to meet new people also trying out something new for the first time.

What is a Freshers’ Week without its wild partying until the early hours? Sheffield has lots to offer on a night out, with varied events, club nights, music, and themes.

• Sunken at Hazy Club - Monday 14th September
• Tropiloco - Monday 14th September
• Casa at Manahatta - Tuesday 15th September
• Hallamnation: Official Hallam Freshers Party - Wednesday 16th September
• The Freshers Full Moon Party at The Viper Rooms - Thursday 17th September
• Sunken x Danza at Electric Studios - Friday 18th September
• Diced at Hazy Club - Saturday 19th September

University of Sheffield students should look out for:

• Tropiloco - Monday 21st September
• ROAR Wednesdays - Wednesday 23rd September (University of Sheffield’s infamous - and Instagrammable - Wednesday sports night out)
• Freshers Fest - Friday 25th September
• Pop Tarts - Saturday 26th September (A weekly club night with all the retro pop anthems you can imagine; hosted at the University of Sheffield Students’ Union, but Hallam students are also welcome)

This is just a small selection of events that are on throughout the two-week period of Hallam and the University of Sheffield to give you a taster of what sort of events to expect, but with an array of options, you are guaranteed to find your favourite - whether it be a rock alternative night at Corporation, or a funk and soul night at Soul Jam.

When is Sheffield Freshers’ Week 2026?

Sheffield Freshers’ Week spreads across two weeks in the city, due to our two universities having staggered start dates. Therefore, if you are a:

• Sheffield Hallam student, prepare to open the silly student fever from 13th to 20th September.

• University of Sheffield student, close the frenzy with a bang from 20th to 26th September.

However, no matter which Sheffield university you are attending, events are across the city and welcome all students regardless of which team you will soon be supporting in varsity.

How to prepare:

Going into Sheffield Freshers’ Week can be daunting; you might be thinking:

• Does everyone already have friends?

• What if I haven’t bought the right tickets?

• How do I find my way around?

• What if I don’t know how to play any sports?

These are all common concerns for any new student - but that’s just it: everyone will be thinking the same. It’s not just you starting fresh; it’s everyone. So you are all in the same boat and willing to meet new people and try new things.

When it comes to being prepared activity-wise and knowing what events are on and when, make sure you are following the social media pages for your University Students’ Unions and nights out - that way you won’t miss out on any ticket sales or events that catch your eye.

Join society group chats and accommodation chats to connect with people beforehand.

But ultimately, just have the best time and be open to new things, meeting new people, and trying out the most random society you can think of. Freshers’ Week is all about exploring your options and learning about your new city. It doesn’t have to be just nights out and just staying in your Students’ Union; you can go out for coffee with your new flatmates, visit some of the parks Sheffield has to offer, and decorate your new room!
