About the author: My name is George Okonkwo, and I am a Broadcast Journalist student at Nottingham Trent University. I have a passion for journalistic and literary writing and research. I also love reading, binge watching TV shows, singing with my terrible voice, and going for walks alone or with friends.

Let’s be honest – big chains are fine when you’re in a rush, but if you really want to experience Nottingham's food scene, independent restaurants are where it’s at. Whether you’re craving Japanese small plates, fresh seafood, or the ultimate burger, the city is packed with hidden gems that deserve way more attention.

So, if you’re bored of the usual spots and want to discover somewhere new, here are some of Nottingham’s best independent restaurants that are 100% worth a visit.

1. Kushi-ya

If you’re a fan of Japanese food, you need to check out Kushi-ya. Tucked away in a little courtyard, Kushi-ya is one of those places your friends would recommend, and for good reason. They specialise in Japanese-inspired small plates, with skewers grilled over charcoal that pack serious flavour. The menu is simple but seriously good, with dishes like miso-glazed aubergine and chicken yakitori that’ll keep you coming back for more. The vibe is relaxed and minimal, making it a great place for a casual dinner or a special date night. Plus, they always have interesting specials on the menu, so there’s always an excuse to return.

🔥 Must-try dish: Miso aubergine with crispy garlic (trust me, even if you’re not a big aubergine fan, this one might convert you).
📍 Where? Cannon Court, NG1 6JE

2. The Lobster Pot

If seafood is your thing, The Lobster Pot should be at the top of your list. This family-run spot serves up fresh, flavour-packed dishes that mix Thai and British influences like rich tom yum soup, buttery lobster, and massive seafood platters. It’s got a super relaxed, almost beachy vibe, making it a great place for a treat-yourself meal.

🔥 Must-try dish: Lobster Thermidor (because when in Rome… or, well, Nottingham).
📍 Where? Mansfield Road, NG1 3FS

3. Yamas

Yamas is one of those places that feels like a hidden gem, even though it’s right in the city centre. Their menu is all about fresh, vibrant Mediterranean flavours like grilled halloumi, juicy souvlaki, crispy calamari... you name it. It’s perfect for a relaxed meal with mates, especially if you love sharing plates (or just want to try a little bit of everything).

🔥 Must-try dish: Chicken souvlaki – simple, delicious, and packed with flavour.
📍 Where? Thurland Street, NG1 3DR

4. Bar Iberico

If you love tapas but want something a little different, Bar Iberico is your spot. The atmosphere is buzzy, the dishes are packed with flavour, and they do an express lunch deal that’s so good. Whether you’re into crispy chicken with spicy aioli, Iberian ham croquettes, or are just in the mood for charcuterie, this place delivers.

🔥 Must-try dish: Crispy chicken with aioli – it’s a classic for a reason.
📍 Where? Carlton Street, NG1 1N

Nottingham is packed with incredible independent restaurants, and these are just a few that should be on your radar. Whether you're in the mood for tapas, seafood, or just a ridiculously good burger, these spots have you covered. So next time you’re thinking about eating out, ditch the chains and try one of these gems instead. You won’t regret it.
