About the author: My name is George Okonkwo, and I am a Broadcast Journalist student at Nottingham Trent University. I have a passion for journalistic and literary writing and research. I also love reading, binge watching TV shows, singing with my terrible voice, and going for walks alone or with friends.

We’ve talked about things like student life in Nottingham, tips, what it’s like being an NTU student, and Nottingham summer activities, so why don’t we focus on one thing that applies to everyone, student or not?

Pictures.

We all love taking pictures of ourselves, of buildings, of events, of parks... and Nottingham doesn't fail to help aesthetically. Whether you’re documenting your student life or just trying to spice up your feed, Nottingham has the perfect backgrounds. From historic gems to colourful cafés, here are the most Instagrammable spots in the city.

1. Wollaton Hall & Deer Park

This one is definitely a classic. Wollaton Hall isn’t just stunning – it’s also Wayne Manor from The Dark Knight Rises. That and the free-roaming deer and sweeping parkland, and you’ve basically got an entire Pinterest board in one place. Unreal golden hour here.

2. The Arboretum

The Arboretum is right by Nottingham Trent University’s city campus (you should already know this as we've talked about it before 🙂‍↕️) and is one of Nottingham’s oldest parks and a green paradise in the middle of the city. Just picture this: flowers in bloom, cute bridges, and a Victorian bandstand. It’s giving Bridgerton picnic vibes.

3. The Lace Market

I suggest this one if you're after something more urban. It has cobbled streets, and its cool graffiti corners make it a go-to for outfit or street shots. Lace market is basically Nottingham’s answer to Shoreditch, but with fewer oat flat whites per square metre.

4. Old Market Square & the Council House

The big Council House is one of Nottingham’s most recognisable landmarks, and I just love how Old Market Square transforms with every season. Ice rink and Christmas market in winter, beach and fairground rides in summer. Whatever the season, your Instagram fans (just kidding – I know you only have a hundred followers) will thank you.

5. Nottingham Contemporary

With bold architecture and free exhibitions that change every few months, the Contemporary is not only good for artsy selfies but also your dose of culture. It also serves as the perfect spot for minimalists or anyone chasing that “moody gallery” aesthetic.

6. Hockley

Hockley is essentially Nottingham’s “Creative Quarter”, which is packed with indie shops and colourful street art. With its fairy-lit streets and quirky backdrops, you’ll want to snap pictures mid-coffee run. Bonus points if you catch it during one of the street markets.

7. Sneinton Market Avenues

Now, this is one I never really go to myself, but Sneinton Market is a revitalised market space that is student gold. It comes with murals, local makers, and outdoor food stalls, so if your Instagram vibe is colour and community, this is where you’ll find it.

8. River Trent Embankment

This one is for sunset walks or cosy couple shots (sadly, I can’t relate.) The reflections of Trent Bridge on the water are perfect for sunny snaps, so grab a coffee and take a stroll, and you’ve got a post worthy evening without even trying.

9. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem

This is known as England’s oldest pub, which shocks me (even though I don't drink) because, imagine walking past the oldest…well, anything in your country. It's built into the rock beneath Nottingham Castle, and it’s a must-add to your Nottingham photo dump.

10. Extra hidden gems

  • Victoria Embankment Memorial Gardens — blossom season here is unbeatable.
  • Broadway Cinema stairwell — yes, even the stairwell is a vibe.
  • Nottingham Castle viewpoint — panoramic views over the city skyline.

Nottingham might not be London or Paris, but trust me, your camera roll will never be empty here. You’ll find plenty of backdrops to make your uni years look as good as they feel. Just don’t forget to put the phone down and actually enjoy the moment (after you’ve got the shot, of course 😉).
