About the author: Hi! My name is Gabriella Farrugia. I’m in my final year at Bournemouth University, studying Media and Communication, which I absolutely love. I enjoy good music, running along Bournemouth beach, recording my podcast, and, of course, writing about what have been some of the best years of my life.

With summer fast approaching and longer, brighter days, it’s time to make the most of Bournemouth’s nature and beaches with the best running routes.

I have compiled a list of the best local running spots to inspire you, suitable for both beginners and more advanced runners. They are also great for walking, if that’s more your thing.

So, get out of bed, turn Netflix off, and get those running shoes on…

*A huge thanks to my running friends for your suggestions and help with this blog post!*

Where to run in Bournemouth: six top spots

1. Bournemouth Beach to Boscombe Beach 🏖️

An obvious but nonetheless fantastic route, Bournemouth Beach to Boscombe Beach and back, is perfect for beginner and experienced runners alike.

This running route in Bournemouth is a 5k distance, and it has to be my favourite. I often run it with BU Girls Running; the glorious sight of the beach never gets boring. It’s also super convenient if you fancy a toilet break or drink stop along the way, with plenty of cafés along the beach, as well as in Bournemouth town centre. Both beaches are also particularly busy at this time of year, making the route extra safe.

I recommend making the most of the spring and summer sunsets and timing your runs around them!

2. Bournemouth Beach to Southbourne Beach ☀️

If you fancy trying a new beach, then run through the beaches of Bournemouth and Boscombe to the gorgeous Southbourne Beach. Southbourne is also less crowded and much quieter compared to the other beaches.

This running route in Bournemouth is around 5.8km, and you can bus or walk back to the town. Or, continue running through Southbourne to achieve a 10k.

If you want to extend your run, then I recommend visiting Sobo Beach. They serve everything from coffee and cocktails to delicious burgers. Flamingo in Boscombe is another great option, too.

3. Slades Park 🌳

Slades Park is ideal for anyone living in or around the Winton area. Lapping the park will give you a solid 5km, but if you’d prefer something more leisurely, then simply lap it once.

This area has become a new favourite of mine. I recently discovered it by joining Up and Running, a fantastic local running shop that also hosts weekly 5km runs every Monday at 6:00 PM.

Slades Park Pavilion also have a café and toilets if you fancy a quick break.

4. Littledown Park 🦆

Littledown Park, near Castle Point, is another gorgeous park route. It has a one-mile running trail, making it super convenient. Keep an eye out for the lake, too!

The park is also suitable for a leisurely (or fast!) 5km run.

I recommend checking out BH Live Active ‘Lookout’, which features an indoor bar and outdoor terrace. There’s everything from live music to dining or a quick drink, satisfying those post-run cravings.

5. Poole Park ⚓️

For those who fancy a 10km+ run and don’t know where to run in Bournemouth, Poole Park is an idyllic route. Start at the park and then be sure to run by the Blue Lagoon and Poole Park Boating Lake.

Passing the boats and the vast sea whilst running such a distance is a fantastic distraction, and will be sure to keep you going.

If you want to run outside of Bournemouth regularly, then Poole Athletic Club is a great community of runners and hosts different sessions. Thursdays are free for anyone to come along, and distances vary from 5km to 12km depending on your chosen pace group.

6. Hengistbury Head 🏞️

Hengistbury Head is another fun long-distance running route in Bournemouth. You can begin your journey at Lansdowne, along to Boscombe Town, and eventually through Hengistbury Head.

Don’t worry about running through the woods, too. Plenty of dog walkers and families will pass you by throughout the route.

Fun fact: Hengistbury Head is home to over 500 plant species and 300 types of birds! Be sure to check it out on a dry, sunny day, so that you can make the most of the views.
