About the author: My name is George Okonkwo, and I am a Broadcast Journalist student at Nottingham Trent University. I have a passion for journalistic and literary writing and research. I also love reading, binge watching TV shows, singing with my terrible voice, and going for walks alone or with friends.
Let’s be real: not everyone wants to spend their uni nights sweating it out in a club, queuing for the loo, and waking up with a questionable wrist stamp and zero memory of how they got home. I know that’s exactly what I don’t want. If you’re sober, cutting back, or just not into the clubbing scene, Nottingham’s got way more to offer than just Jägerbombs and VKs.
Here’s your go-to guide for having a great time in Notts – no alcohol required.
1. Game on at The Dice Cup
Located just off Mansfield Road, this vegan board game café is a gem for a chilled evening with mates. Whether you’re into Monopoly meltdowns or full-blown strategy games, there’s something for every type of player. The Dice Cup's vibe is relaxed, the snacks are solid, and the staff genuinely know their board game stuff.
2. Take a stroll in the Arboretum
This peaceful green space is just minutes from the city centre, but it feels like a world away. It's ideal for a walk-and-talk with a mate, solo journaling time, or feeding the ducks when you need a uni break (or a life break). In spring, it’s full of blooming flowers and good vibes.
3. Go climbing at Depot
If you’re looking for a bit of an adrenaline kick without hitting the pub, head to Depot Climbing. It’s all bouldering (so no ropes or harness faff), and it’s beginner-friendly. A great way to de-stress, get moving, and try something a bit different – plus, it’s a great social activity if you fancy dragging your housemates along.
4. Catch a film at the Savoy
Forget your standard cinema chain. The Savoy in Lenton is Nottingham’s oldest independent cinema and gives serious retro vibes. The tickets are cheap, the snacks don’t cost half your student loan, and they show everything from new releases to indie films. It’s the perfect mid-week chill spot.
5. Grab a coffee and people-watch
Notts is full of brilliant coffee shops, and if you’re not out drinking then a late-night coffee crawl is very underrated. Try 200 Degrees for strong vibes and even stronger caffeine, The Pudding Pantry if you’re after something sweet, or Fox Café for a tucked-away gem. Bonus points for bringing a book and pretending you’re in a moody student film.
6. Escape (literally) at Escapologic
Nothing bonds a group like being locked in a room and forced to solve cryptic puzzles under pressure. Escapologic has escape rooms ranging from creepy horror themes to spy adventures. It’s like a night out, except instead of queueing for the bar, you’re hunting for clues and screaming (in a fun way).
7. Browse the indie markets
Sneinton Market is a hotspot for creative stalls, vintage finds, and local eats. There’s usually something happening on weekends – from vegan food markets to second-hand clothes pop-ups. Bring cash and curiosity, and you’ll always leave with something random but cool.
8. Join a society that doesn't revolve around pints
Nottingham’s student societies are wild in the best way. Love Taylor Swift? There’s a society. Into film photography? There’s one for that too. Loads of them run sober socials like film nights, museum trips, and bowling – ideal if you want to make friends without navigating club toilets in the dark.
9. Head to Stonebridge City Farm
Yep, there’s a literal farm in the middle of the city. Go say hi to the goats, grab some cake at the café, or get your serotonin boost from petting fluffy animals. Stonebridge City Farm is wholesome, random, and exactly the kind of sober day out you didn’t know you needed.
10. Host a house night in
Sometimes the best nights don’t involve leaving the house. Grab your housemates, order too much food, and line up a movie marathon, quiz night, or homemade bake-off. You’ll save money, actually hear each other talk, and avoid getting elbowed in a club queue.
Being a student doesn’t have to mean nights out every night. Whether you’re sober by choice or just fancy a break from the clubbing scene, Nottingham has plenty of alcohol-free options that are fun, social, and don’t come with a hangover. So next time someone says “fancy a night out?”, you can say yes, and skip the shots.
