About the author: Hi, I’m Emily Bath! I’m in my final year at Leeds Beckett University studying Media, Communication, and Cultures. I’m definitely a homebody at heart and love getting lost in a good book, but I also enjoy heading out for a hike, catching up with friends, or discovering new playlists to keep me motivated while working.
If you’re in Leeds for uni and want somewhere that feels calm but not boring, social but not loud, then Burley might just be your perfect match. It sits right between Hyde Park and Kirkstall, and it’s known for being a little more relaxed than the busiest student areas but still close enough to all the action that you never feel out of the loop. It’s no surprise that Burley was the 5th most popular area for student accommodation in Leeds for the 25/26 letting season (according to UniHomes), which pretty much speaks for itself.
Find student housing bargains in Burley
One thing you’ll notice straight away in Burley is that you get more space for your money. The streets feel more residential, the houses often come with more bedrooms (than, say, the student flats you find in Leeds city centre), and you’re close to every shop, café, and bus route you need.
As of November 2025, UniHomes reports that the average rent for student houses in Burley is £138.54 per person per week, with options ranging from £93 per person per week all the way up to £216 per person per week – there’s something for every budget.

Exploring Burley’s best bits
Let’s talk food, because if you’re anything like the rest of us, 80% of your personality during uni is based on your eating habits.
If you love sweet treats, Chunk will have you covered with their famous volcano cookies. And if you want something sugary and coffee, Kulture Coffee is the cosiest place; the drinks are great, the cookies are even better, and it doubles as a study spot or for a bit of people watching.
When it comes to an actual meal out, Lupe’s Cantina is the local legend. Proper Mexican food, good prices, and the perfect place for a housemate celebration or spontaneous “we can’t cook tonight”.
And if you’re more of a pizza person, Homeboy Pizza Co. is the go-to. Fresh, delicious, and dangerously easy to order from after a long day of uni. Everyone who moves to Burley ends up going at least once, and most become regulars.

Endless choices for where to hang out
When you’re in the mood for something a bit livelier, Cardigan Fields is basically Burley’s all-in-one entertainment zone. You’ve got a gym, a bowling alley, a trampoline park, a load of restaurants (including the new Wingstop), bars, Aldi for your weekly shop, and even a cinema – so you can go from working out… to eating wings… to watching a film… all without leaving the same street.
If you need a break from staring at lecture slides all day, you’re not far from some lovely nature spots. Kirkstall Valley and the canal are perfect for a peaceful wander. And, of course, there’s Burley Park, the heart of the neighbourhood. On the rare occasions when Leeds gets sunshine, it becomes the spot for summer picnics, frisbee attempts, and people-watching.

A location that just makes life easier
One of Burley’s biggest selling points is how conveniently placed it is. You’re close enough to the universities that you can walk or hop on a quick bus, but far enough away that you aren’t living right on top of nightlife noise. Burley Park train station is a lifesaver (one stop to the city centre), and is super handy for getting home during reading week.
Being between Hyde Park and Headingley means you get the best of both worlds. Fancy a drink? It’s a short walk to the bars on Otley Road. Need a big food shop? There’s an Aldi, Asda, Co-op, and plenty of local shops nearby. Even though it’s well connected, Burley still has that residential, slightly-calmer feel without feeling out of the way, which is exactly why students love it.
Student life that actually feels balanced
What students love about Burley is how easy it is to settle in. You’ll find your go-to takeaway, your regular brunch place, your favourite study café, and before you know it, you’ll be recommending Burley to every incoming first-year you meet. With more students choosing Burley every year, great transport links, and plenty of things to do, it’s clear why it continues to be a top pick for Leeds students.
If you end up living here, you’re in for a great year.
