University parties are all the rage. Every day, in flats and student houses across your city, parties will be in full swing, getting revellers ready for a night on the town or a shindig at your mates’ until 5 AM. But no good party is complete without a theme of some description, inspiring people to try something new and experiment with their creativity. So, if you’re looking for a fun and affordable theme for your next party, try some of our uni party theme ideas below.

Warning: These theme ideas are a danger of being a lot of fun!

Top costume party theme ideas

If you’ve not got an obvious event like Christmas or St Patrick’s Day lined up, what costume ideas can you go for?

White lies

One of the easiest, quickest, and cheapest (and most effective) costume party themes comes in the form of the white lies party. Simply take a plain white T-shirt or other top, grab a black Sharpie and write a short sentence about yourself that’s not true - simple as that!

The beauty of this idea is the uniqueness it brings; conversations are easier to start, you get to share a bit about your personality, and you get to learn something about everyone else around you. It also allows you to style yourself however you want on your bottom half whilst still fitting in with the theme, and lets you take it to whatever extent you want to. Whether it’s you never turning up to your 9 AM lectures, or revealing how many of your flatmates you’ve gotten with so far, white lies parties are a crucible of creativity that’s in the palm of your hand, and not a drain on your pocket.

Dress as your degree

A theme as old as time, yet a classic that always pulls through: dress as your degree lets the world know why you’re at university, whilst also inspiring you to be as creative as possible. Simply style yourself on your degree subject, and let everyone you go out with guess what you study!

With a chance to show your colours to your friends, flatmates, and those you meet on your night out, you can make a game of this theme as well, for those who enjoy some midnight entertainment. Want to make it more challenging? Ban the scientists from wearing lab coats, stop the sports students from wearing football kits, and don’t let the businesspeople or economists wear suits!

First letter of your name

Another simple uni party theme, yet one which knows no bounds, dressing as the first letter of your name is a true wildcard theme, with no one quite sure what your final menagerie will look like. Unlike most other themes, this one will make your outfit truly unique - what’s the chance someone will have the same letter as your name and have the same idea as you?

From angels to apples, devils to Danny DeVito, or Simpsons to sunshine, the opportunities are absolutely endless. And if you want to relive the fun, you can move on to surnames or the location you’re originally from. The more letters in play, the more the final group will be different at your next great party!

Dress as someone else

This one requires a little bit more planning, but is great fun if you can pull it off. Pull together a list of the people who’ll be joining you, and randomly assign everyone another member of the group. Then, they’ve got to turn up dressed in the style of the person they’ve been allocated. If you’re feeling creative, head to a local charity shop and try shopping as they would. Or if you’re struggling with ideas or on a tighter budget, ask to borrow a few items from their wardrobe - just be sure to wash them before returning!

If doing this for the whole group is challenging, try breaking off into satellite groups; the host house could be one group, your coursemates another, and the house over the road could be a third. Possibilities are endless, as is the fun and chaos to ensue!

A group costume

The classic costume party theme, a group costume, is always sure to bring the laughs, the fun, and a great family-style photo to boot! Whilst this idea can be the most expensive, especially if a particularly wild theme is selected, with a bit of time and savvy shopping, it doesn’t have to be! Simply select a group or cohort from the real world, past, pop culture, or anywhere, and as a group, select who or what you’ll embody - and watch the family come together!

The Scooby-Doo gang, sea creatures, Eurovision winners, former Prime Ministers, or the cast of Star Wars unite in this costume chaos that’ll be sure to bring many memories for years to come. If you stick with the same group, this theme is also very replicable - simply select a different theme next time, and rinse and repeat for maximum excitement!

Themed costume parties are the epitome of the university experience. Whether you’ve done one for Halloween or one hundred throughout the different semesters, they never fail to get old, providing a laugh to everyone involved and everyone you meet. Get creative, keep the budget low, and you’ll be making memories long after the sun has come up.
